Gem 1878 Three Dollar Gold Piece PCGS MS65

The mintage figures for circulation-strike three-dollar gold coins don’t translate perfectly into relative availability status for the respective issues. The best example is the first-year 1854 issue with the highest mintage of the series at 138,618 coins. The 1878 three-dollar issue, with a lower production of 82,304 pieces, is considerably more collectible than its higher-mintage predecessor and an ideal choice for type purposes.

Listed at $12,000 in the CDN CPG and $17,500 in the PCGS price guide.

1882 Three Dollar Gold Piece NGC MS65+ DPL

DMPL Gem $3

The 1882 three dollar gold piece claims a business-strike mintage of 1,500 pieces, certainly a small total in absolute terms, but not out-of-the-ordinary in the context of the series. The 1882 has a relatively high survival rate, probably because contemporary collectors realized the low production total would make the coins more desirable in the future and saved high-quality pieces. The issue is still very rare at the MS65 level, however. This coin is quite dramatic in appearance, with fully, deeply mirrored surfaces on each side, accompanied by heavily frosted devicesThis is one of only two examples of this date to have received the highly coveted DPL designation from NGC. The other was graded a lowly MS62DPL.

1866 Three Dollar Gold Piece PCGS MS64

Rare, Flashy Near-Gem

Struck shortly after the close of the Civil War, the 1866 three dollar gold piece was not saved in any meaningful quantity by collectors, and thus its low 4,000-coin mintage had more of an effect on high-grade availability than can be said of the mintages of later issues in the series. Mint State survivors are scarce across the board, but are notably rare above the MS62 level. The example offered here is highly lustrous and flashy, with a lovely overall appearance. The PCGS population is only 7 with 5 higher and if you were even able to locate an MS65 example, it would likely be more than double the price of this coin.  Listed at $16,300 in the CDN CPG, $13,000 in the PCGS price guide and $17,500 in Trends.
