1875-S Twenty Cent Piece NGC MS67

A Blazer, Only One Graded Higher

The twenty cent denomination is one of the great failures in American numismatics. There was never any great need for it. Its use was limited to the West, where consumers would often pay a quarter for items worth a bit (one reale, or 12.5 cents) and receive a dime back in change. Copper did not circulate in the Pacific states, so consumers were often shortchanged by two cents. The twenty cent denomination was suggested by Nevada Senator John P. Jones as a way of solving that problem. It never caught on, and the denomination was abandoned for circulation in 1876, one year after it was first introduced.   The NGC population I sonly 8 with 1 higher.

1924-S Standing Liberty Quarter PCGS MS66FH

Just One Graded Higher

The availability of the 1924-S quarter in Full Head plummets above MS65, where it becomes one of the lesser-known condition rarities of the series. Coins are rarely seen in MS66 Full Head and are nearly unknown finer at PCGS. In fact, this is one of only sixteen MS66’s recognized by PCGS with a single (MS67) example graded higher. This one is very nicely detailed and exhibits plentiful luster.

1916-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS66+

Only 3 Graded Higher

Only San Francisco produced double eagles in 1916. Almost the entire mintage was initially put into storage, but quantities were later exported for trade, mainly to South America and Asia. In 1916, the United States exported more than $100 million worth of gold coin. Today, the 1916-S double eagle is moderately elusive in MS66 condition, and NGC lists only four MS66+ examples (including this one) with just 3 graded higher.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS60

Tougher date; Minor Premium

From a robust mintage of 1.2 million pieces, the 1879-S Liberty double eagle was heavily circulated at the time of issue and many examples were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade. Many coins have been repatriated from overseas holdings in recent years, but most examples seen have excessive bag-marks from rough storage and transport. Mint State coins are scarce in today’s market and high-grade examples are rare.

1901-S Liberty Eagle NGC MS67

Superb, Stunning

This San Francisco Liberty ten issue is a stalwart choice for type collectors based on its high-quality production and lustrous, attractive color. With a mintage of more than 2.8 million pieces, it is one of the most available issues in the series. The present coin provides ample evidence of the popularity, with gleaming and frosty rich-gold color plus a sharp strike. The NGC population stands at 23 (one of which has been designated with a “star”) with none higher, Listed at $24,200 in the CDN CPG and $28,500 in the NGC price guide.

1901-S Barber Quarter PCGS MS66

Don’t Throw Away This “Key” (Date)

David Lawrence calls the 1901-S the “King of all Barber Quarters” because of its low mintage and low survival rate. Only 72,664 Barber quarters were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1901, a remarkably low mintage for any 20th century coin. There were relatively few coin collectors on the West Coast in 1901. Interest in collecting mintmarked issues was still in its infancy in the rest of the country, so most of the small mintage slipped into circulation at the time of production. Few examples were saved for numismatic purposes.  As a result, most 1901-S quarters appear in lower circulated grades today. Mint State coins are quite elusive. The PCGS population is only 4 with 5 higher. This one is frosty, white and gorgeous!

1910-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65+

Gem, and Then Some

Roger Burdette estimates a total of 9,500 pieces survive from a mintage of more than 2.1 million 1910-S double eagles. About 70-75% of those were repatriated from foreign holdings. Such coins would be an unlikely source for an example of this quality, given the rigors of transit and storage. This particular example offers lovely color and atypically clean surfaces, as well as a very nice overall appearance. The PCGS population currently stands at just 6 with 13 higher. Listed at $12,500 in the PCGS price guide.

1907-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

Very Rarely Seen

This San Francisco issue is a significant condition rarity in the Liberty Head series. Although more than 2.1 million pieces were minted, fewer than three dozen pieces are certified in Gem condition. As a final-year issue in the Liberty Head series, it is possible the San Francisco Mint turned its attentions elsewhere and used little care in releasing the freshly minted coins into commerce or storage. Most survivors are heavily bag-marked. Luckily, there are a few exceptions and this coin is one of them. It is one of nineteen so graded by NGC, with none higher. Listed at $21,800 in the CDN CPG, $21,000 in the NGC price guide and $23,500 in Trends.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS62

Rare Unc. S-Mint $20 Lib

For all practical purposes, MS62 is the optimal collectible grade for this San Francisco date. While all Mint State coins are scarce, the value increases dramatically above the MS62 level. By way of example, to our knowledge, the last MS63 – a PCGS example – to have been auctioned brought $29,375 more than three years ago. None have been graded higher by NGC. Listed at $15,600 in the CDN CPG, $14,600 in the NGC price guide and $16,500 in Trends.
