Tied for Highest Graded – 1871 Two Cent Piece PCGS PR67RD

WE TRUST is die doubled, as always on proofs of this date. Full Red examples of the 1871 proof two cent pieces are scarce but occasionally seen in grades from PR64 to PR66. However, Registry collectors or other advanced specialists may wish to seek a Superb Gem Red example, and here collectors will encounter a severe challenge. PCGS lists only two coins in PR67 Red, and NGC has seen just two additional pieces in the same grade.
Listed at $45,000 in the PCGS price guide.

1882 Gold Dollar PCGS PR67CAM

A Proof (Gold) $1 With Contrast

The 1882 and 1883 gold dollars were the last of the relatively low mintage proof issues with 125 and 207 proofs minted, respectively. Beginning in 1884 through the end of the series in 1889, proof mintages exceeded 1,000 coins each year. In addition to the 125 proofs, the Philadelphia Mint coined 5,000 circulation strikes, and many of the latter coins have proof-like surfaces, being called proofs in years gone by. This is the ONLY PR67CAM to have been graded by PCGS with none higher.

1903 Louisiana Purchase McKinley Gold Dollar PCGS PR67 Cameo

Highest Graded

The 1903 gold dollars depicting presidents Thomas Jefferson and William McKinley were issued in conjunction with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis in 1904. The Louisiana Purchase Expo gold dollars were the first gold commemoratives struck by the U.S. Mint (excluding the 1848 CAL. quarter eagle). The first 100 pieces of each design struck were produced in proof format and given to government and exposition officials, along with a few others who were well-connected. This is the only PR67 Cameo graded by PCGS, with none higher.

1845 No Motto Seated Liberty Dollar NGC PR67

Exceptionally Rare

This incredible proof is pedigreed to the John Jay Pittman Collection, where it was part of Pittman’s “Complete 1845 Proof Set in Original Case.” In his discussion of this coin, David Akers wrote:

“This proof silver dollar is essentially perfect and is unquestionably the finest proof dollar of the decade that I have ever seen. It is fully struck with a sharp square edge and deep mirror fields that are immaculate and pristine. The few lines present in the fields are actually planchet lines that were not eliminated by the minting process; they are not hairlines. The toning is as extraordinary and perfect as the technical quality of the surfaces, a superb medium multicolored iridescent blend of reddish-gold, which is the predominant color, and considerate violet and blue. Every star is boldly defined with all of its radial lines, and the head and foot of Liberty are extremely sharp. All of the eagle’s features and talons are also fully struck.”

It’s estimated that there are approximately 15 Proof examples known. This is the only PR67 graded by NGC with none higher and PCGS hasn’t graded any higher than PR65.

1885 Gold Dollar PCGS/CAC PR67 DCAM

Simply Splendidly Stunning

Of the 1,105 gold dollar proofs struck in 1885, PCGS has certified a total of 107 submissions. That figure comprises all designations and almost certainly includes duplications. From among those 107 submissions, only 14 have received a Deep Cameo designation. Few match or exceed the quality of this outstanding Gem. The majority of known examples do not display any degree of cameo contrast, highlighting the utmost rarity of this offering. A thick coating of frost covers fully struck motifs, allowing for the appreciation of the bold contrast produced against the deeply reflective, glassy mirrors of this stunning representative. Opportunities to acquire a Deep Cameo example of the 1885 are extremely rare and not to be passed up. The PCGS population is just three with only two (PR67+’s) higher.
