Pop 1, Highest Graded – 1872 Two Cent Piece NGC PR66+ RD

The 1872 two cent piece is a classic case of the reason why proofs are so sought after. Only 65,000 pieces were struck for circulation, making that issue all-but-unobtainable for most collectors, especially in high grades. This availability vacuum has traditionally been filled by proofs, of which 950 pieces were produced. The one offered here offers vibrant color and even some cameo contrast.

The NGC population is 1 with none graded higher!

1866 Motto Seated Liberty Half Dollar NGC PR66 Cameo

Only 725 proof Seated Liberty half dollars were minted in 1866, the first year to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST as part of the reverse design. Proofs are seldom encountered today, but may still be more available than Mint State business strikes. This particualr example is brilliant and color-free, but for some traces of peripheral toning on each side. The NGC population is just 2 with 3 graded higher

Listed at $11,500 in the NGC price guide.

Offered at $8,400

1911 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC PR66

Luscious Proof

In his recent reference on proof U.S. gold, John Dannreuther specifically commented on the color and texture of the 1911 proof twenties:

“The 100 Proof double eagles struck in 1911 have a lighter finish than seen for the 1908 issues. Many 1911 Proofs have a light orange color with shiny sparkles created by a finer sand grain. The matte finish is among the most desired by today’s collectors, so many of these have found their way into type sets. If one has a choice, the lighter color and sparkle found on 1911 Proofs often is preferred over the darker issues of 1908 and 1912 through 1915.” Only 65 to 70 individual pieces are believed to have survived today in all grades.

1830 Capped Bust Dime NGC PF66

NGC and PCGS combined show just seven grading events for Proof 1830 dimes, two of them being cameo examples. And considering that fewer than a half dozen examples are believed to be extant, it’s quite possible that some of the population data is duplicated. This is the only PR66 graded by either service, with none higher. Though not apparent in our images, it’s richly and attractively toned, as well as fully reflective. It also displays some pleasing cameo contrast.

1869 Seated Liberty Dollar NGC PR66

Scintillating, Silvery and Seated

Notwithstanding the reported mintage of 423,700 1869 Seated Liberty dollars for circulation and 600 proofs, the issue is especially elusive in high grade in either format, especially so in the higher Mint State grades. Apparently most of those coins were either melted at some point or exported to the Orient, which in the end amounts to virtually the same fate. The NGC population is just 11 with 5 higher. Much lighter, brighter and more appealing looking in hand.

1860 Gold Dollar NGC PR66 Cameo

A Very Rare One (G$1)

The 1860 proof gold dollar enjoyed a mintage of 154 pieces. Perhaps Mint Director James Ross Snowden was anticipating larger numbers of collectors to buy proof gold in 1860, the same way he over anticipated the demand for silver and minor proofs. However, this is a rarer issue than that mintage would lead one to expect – it’s likely that many specimens went unsold and were melted after the end of the year. This little jewel of a survivor offers plenty of cameo contrast and flash to viewers. The NGC population is only two with none higher.

1906 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC PR66 Cameo

Glittering, Captivating

Cameo proof gold coinage from the post-1902 period — the year in which the Mint eliminated its earlier production method that produced deeply contrasted surfaces between reflective fields and frosted devices — is quite rare and seldom seen. The example herein offered exhibits deeply mirrored fields, which contrast beautifully with the frosted devices.
