Exceptionally Rare 1879 Pattern Dollar J-1605, Pollock 1801 NGC PR65 Cameo

The Judd reference calls this William Barber obverse similar to the famous “Washlady” design, but to our eyes there are also similarities to the Coiled Hair Stella obverse. Liberty’s hair is tightly coiled about her head in a bun, with two flowing ribbons in back and a beaded headband inscribed LIBERTY. IN GOD WE TRUST and 13 stars appear around the rim, date below. The reverse shows a rather scrawny eagle inside a laurel wreath with evenly matched berry pairs. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the rim — the letters irregularly spaced — and ONE DOLLAR is below. The motto is in small letters above the eagle. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
We wrote of this design in the Lemus-Queller catalog, “In a classic case of closing the barn door after the horse has got out, the Mint in 1879 produced a plethora of silver dollar pattern designs aimed at supplanting the Morgan dollar design of the inexperienced assistant engraver, George T. Morgan — a design that, of course, was struck by the many millions beginning the prior year, in 1878. While the Morgan dollar design saw much criticism in its time, it is well-loved today. If this was meant as an improvement, it is not. … If this is truly a William Barber design as Judd maintains (others differ), it is worth noting that he would have been 71 or 72 when he executed this die. (William Barber died unexpectedly on Aug. 31, 1879, after catching a chill on vacation while being in the surf off of Atlantic City, New Jersey.)”This is the only NGC PR65 Cameo example to appear on their census report with none graded higher. One of the Finest – 1854 Arrows Seated Liberty Quarter NGC PR65

This is the first of a brief two-year design type, and it is an important rarity in Proof format. Although the rarity has sometimes been overstated in the past, there are relatively few Proofs known. Estimates range from just 10 pieces (Walter Breen) to 12 to 15 coins (David Akers). The PCGS estimate is 10 to 15 surviving examples, which has remained unchanged for at least 15 years. These estimates further suggest that the certified population (33 coins at PCGS and NGC combined) is greatly inflated by resubmissions and crossovers. The NGC population is only 2 with 1 graded higher.

Very Rare 1847 Restrike Braided Hair Half Cent NGC PR65RB

The 1847 Braided Hair half cent is an elusive proof-only issue. Both Originals and Restrikes are known. Originals are identified by large berries in the wreath, while Restrikes have small berries in the wreath. There are two variations of proof restrikes. First Restrikes have a doubled T in CENT, and for 1847 are extremely rare. Second Restrikes have short die marks over RICA of AMERICA. This offering is an example of the Second Restrike. In hand, it’s noticeably lighter, as well as more colorful than seen in our images. The NGC population is only 2 with 4 graded higher.

Gem 1870 Seated Liberty Dollar NGC PR65 Cameo

A fairly generous mintage of 1,000 Seated Liberty dollars was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1870, but the issue is much more difficult to locate than the large production total would suggest. It is likely that many coins remained unsold and were melted after the end of the year. Today, the issue is quite elusive at the Gem level, and finer coins are very rare. 1883 Liberty Half Eagle NGC PR65 DCAM

Proof $5 Lib Rarity

The 1883 proof Liberty half eagle claims a mintage of 61 pieces, a notable increase over the previous year, but still a tiny number in absolute terms. Forty examples were issued with the proof sets on February 10 and the rest were struck as individual pieces throughout the year. Unfortunately, the higher mintage just off-set a low survival rate for this issue, and the surviving population is not noticeably larger than those of previous years. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note, “There are fewer than 20 coins traceable today, including those in museum collections.” In hand this beauty is more yellow-gold hue than the red-orange seen in our images. The NGC population stands at just 2 with 2 higher.

1912 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC PR65

As the various proof finishes offered by the Mint in the early 20th century became increasingly unpopular with the public, production totals dropped accordingly. Only 74 proof Saint-Gaudens double eagles were struck in 1912, using an innovative sandblast process in place of the earlier matte and Roman finishes. The sandblast finish created an even mustard coloration over both sides of the coin, with tiny sparkling facets that can be observed with magnification. This sparkle gives the surfaces a vibrant “life” to balance the deep monochromatic coloration. Unfortunately, the sandblast finish proved just as unpopular as the matte and Roman proofs of earlier years. It is likely that some of the coins went unsold and were melted after the end of the year.

1825 Capped Bust Dime NGC PR65

According to some estimates, only six Proof 1825 dimes are known in all grades. Currently, the NGC population is just three, including this one and one graded higher. And the PCGS population is only one. While not apparent in our images, this example is richly and attractively toned in turquoise hues with traces of violet. The surfaces are fully reflective, including within the reverse shield stripes – a trait that PL business strikes are unlikely to exhibit. This is a truly rare and desirable coin!

1907 High Relief Double Eagle NGC PR65+

No official records have surfaced to document the striking of Proof High Reliefs.  However, David Akers, and many other numismatists have gone on record as believing a small number were struck, and NGC has certified some with specific die characteristics, as proofs (PCGS does not recognize the existence of proof High Reliefs at this time). According to Scott Schechter/NGC: The coins exhibit crisp strikes and distinctive satin surfaces, with heavy, swirling die polish lines, and are struck from the earliest state of one specific die pair. The most easily recognized feature is the edge lettering, as all proofs were struck using the same collar used to strike the Ultra High Relief double eagles, with a raised collar-segment line between the S in PLURIBUS and a star.
