Who Wants to Get “Slugged”?

To begin with, the importance of the 1851 $50 gold coins can scarcely be overemphasized. Ask any advanced collector of Territorial gold to name the most significant and memorable coinage design from the early California Gold Rush period, and the Humbert-U.S. Assay Office octagonal $50’s will likely be the first named. For many years, the 1851-52 Humbert-Assay Office fifties remained the only large octagonal gold coins struck under the auspices of the United States (in this case – provisional) Mint.  Although later, California private coiners struck round $50 coins. The importance of these coins is such that even well-circulated examples are bid up to high levels by enthusiasts eager to lay hands on these colorful mementos of the Wild West, the Gold Rush, and the famous “Forty-Niners” who rushed to seek their fortunes in the fields of gold in 1848-49.

Flashy, Eye-Appealing

Struck in .887 fineness under the authority of the United States Assay Office of Gold, Augustus Humbert assayer, the 1852 octagonal fifty dollar slugs are perhaps the most recognized numismatic artifacts of the historic Gold Rush era. The Reeded Edge fifties of this period were much easier to produce than the older Lettered Edge Humbert pieces. Accordingly, they were struck in large numbers and widely accepted throughout the region and in overseas trade. Easily recognized in their day, most examples were later turned in and melted for recoinage at the San Francisco Mint when that facility opened in 1854. The PCGS population stands at 13 with 15 higher. While not apparent in our images, this example is particularly flashy, due to lustrous, semi-prooflike obverse

1915-S Pan Pac Octagonal $50 PCGS MS63

Eight-Sided & Quite Large

Holding an example of the Octagonal fifty dollar gold pieces struck to commemorate the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915, one notices several things. Chief among them are the coins’ size, shape, weight, and intricate design. Of the 1,509 examples struck, 645 pieces were sold to fair-goers for $100 apiece. The Octagonal coins’ novel design, reminiscent of California’s storied Gold Rush, undoubtedly contributed to their popularity. Additionally, the Octagonal slugs depict added dolphins around the margins, symbolizing the new “uninterrupted water route made possible by the Panama Canal.” For the same historic and design reasons collectors sought them out a hundred years ago, collectors continue to seek out examples today in all grades. The coin offered here is somewhat more lustrous and yellow-gold in hue, than seen in our images. Listed at $92,000 in the CDN CPG and $87,500 in the PCGS price guide.
