A “Small Head”

Wass, Molitor & Co. was one of the best-respected assaying and coining firms in San Francisco during the early years of the California Gold Rush. These gold pieces were welcome sights in circulation at a time when coinage was sorely lacking. This is an example of the rare 1852 Small Head variety modeled after the federal half eagle. Differences are most notable on the coronet (“W.M. & Co.”) and reverse legend. The NGC population report shows only two in VF with none higher.

1825 Capped Bust Dime NGC PR65

According to some estimates, only six Proof 1825 dimes are known in all grades. Currently, the NGC population is just three, including this one and one graded higher. And the PCGS population is only one. While not apparent in our images, this example is richly and attractively toned in turquoise hues with traces of violet. The surfaces are fully reflective, including within the reverse shield stripes – a trait that PL business strikes are unlikely to exhibit. This is a truly rare and desirable coin!

1916-S Indian Eagle NGC MS66+

Highest Graded, Rare and Satiny

The 1916-S is a better date in Uncirculated condition, regardless of grade. Only 138,500 pieces were produced. This was the only ten-dollar issue struck in 1916 at any mint, and no eagle coinage followed until 1920. Thus it’s essential for a complete date set of Indian gold. This is the only example graded higher than MS65 by NGC!

1830 Capped Bust Dime NGC PF66

NGC and PCGS combined show just seven grading events for Proof 1830 dimes, two of them being cameo examples. And considering that fewer than a half dozen examples are believed to be extant, it’s quite possible that some of the population data is duplicated. This is the only PR66 graded by either service, with none higher. Though not apparent in our images, it’s richly and attractively toned, as well as fully reflective. It also displays some pleasing cameo contrast.

1914 Barber Half Dollar NGC MS66

Better Date, Highest Graded

The 1914 has the lowest mintage of the Barber half dollars at 124,230 pieces, helping to make it one of the key dates in the series. A few hundred examples have been certified through Very Fine. While the population declines in finer grades, the issue can still be located with patience and searching through about MS64. Gems are rare and higher-grade specimens are virtually unobtainable. This is the only MS66 graded by NGC with none higher. Here is an eye-catching, virtually color-free example.

1899-O Barber Dime NGC MS67 Star

A Star is Born

The 1899-O Barber dime is neither one of the numerous low-mintage series issues produced to the extent of fewer than 1 million pieces, nor is it anyone’s idea of a key issue within the series for other reasons, given its typical O-mint production of 2.65 million coins. It is however, a conditional and strike rarity. By the time of its production in 1899, the series’ novelty — and fleeting it was — had completely worn off, and few collectors of the era set aside examples of any circulation strikes, regardless of mintmark or lack thereof. Angle your neck either far left or far right for a better view! Each side of this coin shows considerable cameo contrast. In researching it, we discovered that we had auctioned t in our April 2012, Central States sale, lot 5067.

1908-D Indian Half Eagle NGC MS65

Rare First Year of Issue

The Philadelphia issue was the chief beneficiary of public hoarding when Bela Lyon Pratt’s Indian Head half eagle made its debut in 1908, and is readily available in most grades today. Its Denver counterpart, however, boasts a surviving population that is more in line with later issues: The date is available in grades through MS64 but becomes a rarity at the Gem level. In fact, he NGC population is only 7 with none higher.

1802/1 Draped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS64

Give Me a 1, No, a 2

 A mintage of 53,176 Capped Bust Right half eagles was accomplished in 1802, using leftover obverse dies from the previous year that have a 2 punched over the final digit in the date. Collectors have prized the early half eagles since the earliest days of the hobby and the 1802/1 began appearing at auction at least as early as lot 176 of the A.C. Kline Sale (M. Thomas & Sons, 6/1855), although the lot description did not mention the overdate. By the mid-1860s, catalogers began taking note of this feature, as W. Elliot Woodward described the coin in lot 2755 of his Sixth Semi-Annual Sale as, “1802 over 1801; uncirculated, as fine as proof; scarce.” The NGC population is 12 with only 1 higher.

1856-O Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC MS62

Mint $2.50 Rarity

The New Orleans Mint struck only 21,100 examples of the 1856-O quarter eagle, a denomination that was unloved and neglected in favor of the half eagle and (after 1849) the double eagle throughout much of its history. San Francisco, in only its third year of operation, also struck 1856-S quarter eagles for the first time since opening, and managed to best New Orleans by a margin of more than 3 to 1. Whether these comparative mintages were an early sign of the increasing decrepitude that would overtake the Southern mint by the early 20th century, or merely an indication of the continuation of the hard-money tradition of the Old West that began a few years earlier with the Gold Rush of 1849, is not readily known today. Nonetheless, 1856-O quarter eagles are quite elusive in Mint State. This is one of only four so-graded by NGC with none higher.

1851 “887” Reeded Humbert $50 NGC XF45

An Eight-Sided Offering

Augustus Humbert was U.S. Assayer in San Francisco and operated his firm under Moffat & Co. as the provisional mint years before the San Francisco mint officially opened. There are two variants of the 1851 887 Thous. reeded edge fifties, differing in the placement of the outer concentric circle on the reverse relative to the rim. In spite of their large size (nicknamed “slugs”), these pieces traded hands frequently in Gold Rush California. They were one of the few forms of gold whose stated value could be trusted. When viewed in hand, the coin is lighter (in hue, not weight!) than seen in our images.
