1888-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS67

1 of only 2 So Graded

Here is a superb, attractively toned example of a true condition rarity. Its surfaces are satin-like in appearance and exceptionally well preserved. In hand, the patina is a bit lighter and the luster, somewhat brighter than seen in our images. Tied with just one other (which is ex-Eliasberg) for the highest graded by NGC. For its part, PCGS has graded just one MS67, with none higher. The aforementioned Eliasberg coin was last auctioned by us in 2014.

1879 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

Offered here is a frosty, white example with exemplary surfaces and a great overall appearance. Not particularly tough to come by through the MS66 grade level, but very rarely seen in this state of preservation. The last PCGS representative we auctioned was all the way back in 2007! Tied with 7 others for the highest graded by PCGS.

1881 Morgan Dollar NGC MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

Contrary to how this coin appears in our images, it’s colorful, vibrant and very attractive. The availability of the 1881 Morgan dollar steadily declines in succeeding grades finer than MS63, but it remains at least marginally available through MS66. Not so in MS67; at the Superb Gem level, the 1881 Morgan is extremely rare. The NGC population is just 3 with none higher.

1928 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS67

Only 8 Graded Higher

The 1928 is the final date in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series that is generally available in high grade, making it a popular type coin. The finest pieces are in MS67 and MS67+, and these are conditionally scarce. Nonetheless, they are among the most affordable Saints available to collectors in this grade, as few other issues in the series claim a collectible population in Superb Gem condition. Only 8 have been graded higher by PCGS – all MS67+ examples.

1899 Barber Half Dollar PCGS MS67

Pop 2, 1 Higher

While the 1899 Barber half dollar is more plentiful than the 1896 and 1898 issues, it is a condition rarity in Gem or finer grades. A lack of interest in business strike Philadelphia Mint issues at the time of issue is largely responsible for the low high-grade survival rate. Prior to the 1980s, most collectors sought out proof coins for the sole reason that they were considered more desirable from an aesthetics viewpoint. The PCGS population is just 2 with a single (MS67+) example graded higher.

1875-S Twenty Cent Piece NGC MS67

A Blazer, Only One Graded Higher

The twenty cent denomination is one of the great failures in American numismatics. There was never any great need for it. Its use was limited to the West, where consumers would often pay a quarter for items worth a bit (one reale, or 12.5 cents) and receive a dime back in change. Copper did not circulate in the Pacific states, so consumers were often shortchanged by two cents. The twenty cent denomination was suggested by Nevada Senator John P. Jones as a way of solving that problem. It never caught on, and the denomination was abandoned for circulation in 1876, one year after it was first introduced.   The NGC population I sonly 8 with 1 higher.

1901-S Liberty Eagle NGC MS67

Superb, Stunning

This San Francisco Liberty ten issue is a stalwart choice for type collectors based on its high-quality production and lustrous, attractive color. With a mintage of more than 2.8 million pieces, it is one of the most available issues in the series. The present coin provides ample evidence of the popularity, with gleaming and frosty rich-gold color plus a sharp strike. The NGC population stands at 23 (one of which has been designated with a “star”) with none higher, Listed at $24,200 in the CDN CPG and $28,500 in the NGC price guide.

1885 Liberty Nickel NGC MS67

Pop 3, None Higher Key Date Lib Nickel

The 1885 has been recognized for more than a century as the coin to have, the key to the set of Liberty nickels. Only 1.4 million pieces were struck and pieces were set aside shortly after this tiny mintage became known; although by the time the general public was aware of it most coins of this date had been in circulation for some time. The availability of the 1885 shows a typical bell curve. At NGC, MS60 pieces show only two pieces certified, numbers gradually increase to the MS64 grade, then quickly taper off to the ultimate grade of MS67. The NGC population is just three (one of which is a star-designated example) with none higher. Listed at $38,700 in the CDN CPG and $25,000 in the NGC price guide.
