1854 Arrows Seated Quarter PCGS MS65+

Gem Two Year Type Rep

In 1853, the weight of the quarter dollar was reduced from 6.68 gm to 6.22 gm, and the reduction was noted on the coins by the addition of arrows on each side of the date and a burst of rays in the reverse fields around the eagle. The rays were removed for 1854 coinage, but the arrows remained at the date until 1856. The With Arrows, No Rays type was coined at Philadelphia and New Orleans in 1854 and 1855, and at San Francisco in 1855. The 1854 Philadelphia issue is the most plentiful of these, coming from a mintage of more than 12.3 million coins. Nonetheless, Gem examples are scarce, and finer pieces are rarely offered. 1895 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS65

A mere + from Highest Graded

Due to its generous mintage and the subsequent exportation and repatriation of many examples, today, the 1895 double eagle is a common date up to the lower reaches of Mint State, generally MS62-MS63 or so, at best. Examples in Choice or Gem condition, such as the one offered here, are extremely elusive, however. PCGS has recognized a mere seven MS65’s with a single MS65+ graded higher. Just two of those PCGS 65’s have sold at auction, the last one being more than three years ago. Listed at $20,000 in both the PCGS price guide and Trends.

1907-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

Very Rarely Seen

This San Francisco issue is a significant condition rarity in the Liberty Head series. Although more than 2.1 million pieces were minted, fewer than three dozen pieces are certified in Gem condition. As a final-year issue in the Liberty Head series, it is possible the San Francisco Mint turned its attentions elsewhere and used little care in releasing the freshly minted coins into commerce or storage. Most survivors are heavily bag-marked. Luckily, there are a few exceptions and this coin is one of them. It is one of nineteen so graded by NGC, with none higher. 1907 Wire Rim Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Beautiful and Vibrant

The 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle is avidly collected by series specialists and pattern collectors alike as the only available issue that shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the ten dollar gold piece. It is listed as Judd-1901 in the current pattern reference, but most numismatists now believe these coins should be considered business strikes. Initially, 542 examples of the design were struck, but only 472 specimens were ever distributed. The remaining 70 coins were melted after 1915. The design exemplifies the style of Saint-Gaudens, sculpted in high relief, with concave fields that slope up directly into the edge of the coin. As compared to our images, the coin is much lighter, brighter and more appealing in hand. Listed at $84,500 in the PCGS price guide.

1911 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65+

The 1911 claims one of the few mintages of less than 200,000 coins, but the story of its availability is similar to that of other issues in the series. Most examples were exported to European markets, either directly from New York to London or through Ottawa, Canada. Those pieces that avoided melting overseas were subjected to rough handling, explaining why nearly all 1911 double eagles are found in MS64 or lower condition. Gems such as this, are scarce. 1907 $10 Indian, No Motto PCGS MS 65

First year of issue for the popular St. Gaudens $10 Indian design. A super lustrous, well struck example, sure to elicit strong collector or dealer interest. This 1907 type with No Periods is fairly common in low grade, but robust demand exists for high end specimens such as this one.

From an original mintage of 239,406, there are only 62 graded finer by PCGS and NGC combined.

Rare Gem – 1838-O No Stars Seated Liberty Dime NGC MS65

After almost half a century without expansion, the U.S. Mint established three branches that began operations in 1838: Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Of the three, only New Orleans struck silver coinage in addition to gold. Only 404,034 representatives were struck. As the first dime issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, this issue is also popular as a two-year No Stars type. In Mint State this date is scarcely seen, and Gem-quality pieces are nothing short of rare. The NGC population is a mere 4 with 2 higher. 1937-D 5c 3 Legs NGC MS65 +

A Top 100 U.S. Coin and Classic 20th Century Rarity.

The 1937-D 3 Legged Nickel is a coin which is known even to people who have no familiarity with coin collecting.

Indeed, it’s one of those classic 20th century rarities that kids used to look for in their change back in the late 30’s and early 40’s and people still remember to this day.

When I have conversations with people about what I do for a living, it’s almost instantly one of the coins that rolls right off their tongue. “Have you encountered a 1937-D 3 Leg, or a 1909-S VDB Cent?” You know, the typical famous rarities everyone wants and has heard of in the news.

It is by far and away one of the most important 20th century rarities made. A result of an over-polishing of the die in the area of the Buffalo’s 4th leg which made it disappear basically altogether, creating an instant and classic famous rarity from the start.

Collectors covet the coin in all grades, but in the higher grades it is an integral addition to those collections wherein only the finest will do.

The present example is graded NGC MS65 +. That little + is key, because the last MS66 we can remember selling was for $55,000 back in 2016, and it hasn’t been uncommon to see them go into the 80k territory when offered either.

An extraordinary achievement in one of the finest grades you can get it in for the money.
