Not Your Everyday S-Mint Morgan

Although heavily touted as a conditionally scarce date in Mint State, the 1883-S Morgan remains collectible in grades through MS64, and is frequently offered at auction in this range. It is the Gem grade level from where this issue draws its fame. In MS65, the 1883-S Morgan is a grand rarity in absolute numbers, and in the context of the series, is prohibitively rare. This particular example is sharp, flashy and virtually white, with considerable eye-appeal. The PCGS population is just 21 with 5 higher.

1879-CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS65

Flashy Gem, Super Popular Morgan

For practical collecting purposes, none of the Carson City issues in the Morgan dollar series are particularly difficult to acquire in circulated condition, although the 1889-CC is far more expensive than its counterparts. Cross over into Mint State and little changes, although a few dates become noticeably more challenging to locate in eye-appealing condition. Among these is the 1879-CC. This is the second-scarcest issue in Uncirculated condition overall, and in MS65, only the 1889-CC and 1893-CC are rarer. The 1879-CC, in high grade, is sometimes referred to as “the other Carson City key.” The one offered here is sharply detailed and flashy, with highly desirable semi-prooflike fields. Only 9 have been graded higher by NGC.

1916 Standing Liberty Quarter NGC MS65FH

From a remarkably low 20th century mintage of 52,000 pieces, the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is an acknowledged key to the series. First-year type collectors have no other option to choose from, as no quarters were struck at the branch mints in 1916. The Type One design as modified the following year to cover Liberty’s torso with a coat of chain mail, another important consideration for type purposes. Thus, the 1916 is prized by collectors of several different collecting disciplines and examples are always in high demand.  The one offered here is lightly toned on the reverse and features satiny surfaces. It is also brighter in hand than seen in our images.

1831 Small Letters Capped Bust Quarter NGC MS65

The 1831 Capped Bust quarter claims a mintage of 398,000 pieces, with seven die varieties known for the date. Chief Engraver William Kneass experimented with two different sized punches for the reverse lettering, creating Small Letters and Large Letters subtypes. While not designated on the NGC grading label, this is a Small Letters example. The one offered here is brighter and flashier than seen in our images. Only six 1831 quarters of various varieties have been graded higher by NGC.

When one just looks at the mintage of 73,700 pieces, the 1878 would appear to be moderately scarce but nothing would tip off the collector to just how rare it actually is in high grades. Our records show merely six MS64 appearances for the 1878 eagle in the past 10 years, attesting to the issue’s extreme rarity at this grade level. Both the NGC and PCGS population reports show just a single MS65 example with none graded higher.

1857-S S.S.C.A. Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS63 and MS65

1882 Three Dollar Gold Piece NGC MS65+ DPL

The 1882 three dollar gold piece claims a business-strike mintage of 1,500 pieces, certainly a small total in absolute terms, but not out-of-the-ordinary in the context of the series. The 1882 has a relatively high survival rate, probably because contemporary collectors realized the low production total would make the coins more desirable in the future and saved high-quality pieces. The issue is still very rare at the MS65 level, however. This coin is quite dramatic in appearance, with fully, deeply mirrored surfaces on each side, accompanied by heavily frosted devices. This is one of only two examples of this date to have received the highly coveted DPL designation from NGC. The other was graded a lowly MS62DPL.

1899-S Liberty Double eagle NGC MS65

A Rare Gem

Although the San Francisco Mint struck slightly more than 2,000,000  double eagles in 1899, many of them were used in foreign banking and business transactions. Additionally, many of the extant examples were repatriated from European holdings in recent decades. This very sharply struck examples is tied with ten others for the highest graded by NGC. For its part, PCGS has graded only three MS65’s with one higher. Listed at $20,600 in the CDN CPG, $24,500 in the NGC price guide and $21,000 in Trends.
