Tied for Highest Graded – 1878 (Strong) 7/8TF Morgan Dollar PCGS MS65 DMPL

The first Morgan dollars had an eagle with eight tailfeathers. Mint officials soon received feedback from ornithophiles that an even number of tailfeathers was an impossibility and a decision was soon made to change the design to seven feathers. Existing dies were reworked, creating the 7/8 Tailfeather varieties, although the number of original feather tips varies on different dies, creating the varieties known as Strong or Weak. If four or more of the feather tips are visible, the variety is designated as strong. If fewer than four feather tips are present, the variety is described as weak. This one is clearly an example of the former. The PCGS population is just 6 with none graded higher.

Gem Saint Rarity – 1924-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65

The last decade of Saint-Gaudens double eagle production can be classified broadly as having resulted in three distinct types of issues. The first are mass-produced and readily available Philadelphia issues struck from 1924 through 1928. Those five dates accounts for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of high-grade Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar gold pieces on the secondary market. The second group includes the scarce, heavily melted branch mint issues manufactured during that same span, including the 1924-D, 1924-S, 1925-D, 1925-S, 1926-D, 1926-S, 1927-D, and 1927-S. All of those issues can prove challenging, some more so than others (like the 1927-D), and none are nearly as accessible as their generally substantial mintages suggest. The third group combines both Philadelphia and branch mint issues. It includes the five final “collectible” Saint-Gaudens twenties struck from 1929 to 1932 plus the essentially unobtainable 1933.
The 1924-D ranks among the most accessible of those branch mint melt rarities. Roger Burdette notes that all but 13,229 of the 3 million coins struck were melted as part of the Gold Act of 1933, and 217 additional coins were melted for assay purposes. Burdette explains that a number of coins were shipped to Europe for use in international payments and writes: “A number of small hoards of the 1924-D were uncovered in Europe in the 1950s, 1960s, and even in the 1970s.” About 1,200 examples are believed to survive, nearly all of which are found in grades up to and including MS64 but rarely higher. The PCGS population is 10 with 6 graded higher.

Listed at $168,000 in the CDN CPG and $175,000 in the PCGS price guide.

1818/5 Capped Bust Quarter NGC MS65

Although 10 die varieties are known for the 1818 quarters from among five obverse and seven reverse dies, only the B-1 obverse features the 1818/5 overdate, with the 81, wide in the date and faint remnants of the 5 inside the upper loop. It is paired with a reverse showing large rim dentils, the scroll ending between AM, and a long, upward-curving flag on the 5 in the denomination. The overdate is a Guide Book -listed variety, increasing its popularity among that collecting subset, and it is an overdate that is widely available in high grades, up to the near-Gem level or so. The NGC population is just 8 with 3 graded higher.

Listed at $29,400 in the CDN CPG and $25,500 in the NGC price guide.

Blast White1904-S Barber Half NGC MS65

Pop 1. Two Finer at NGC. Blast white. A meager mintage of 553,038 Barber Half Dollars was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1904. Most of the mintage circulated heavily in the regional economy and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. As a result, the 1904-S is one of the most challenging issues in the Barber Half Dollar series, especially in high grade. This spectacular Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements. The virtually pristine brilliant surfaces are lustrous and appealing. Nice Price Guide comp, too!

Offered at $28,000 delivered.

1799/8 Draped Bust Dollar NGC MS65

A Pre-1800 Gem Dollar

The 1799/8 Draped Bust dollars are popular because of their dramatic over dates. This is the “13 Stars Reverse” variety, as opposed to the other for this date – the “15 Stars Reverse”. The one offered here exhibits lighter color and more luster than seen in our unflattering images. Additionally, the surfaces are refreshingly clean, even considering the lofty grade. This is the only MS65 graded by NGC with a single (MS66) example graded higher.

1929 Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS65

None Graded Higher

Only the Philadelphia Mint coined gold in 1929, and production was focused on the double eagle denomination. The 1929 half eagle is, in terms of total population, the rarest Indian Head five in the series. Several hundred pieces survive, primarily in Mint State, since this issue never circulated. However, the PCGS population report shows only 12 at this grade level with NONE HIGHER. Nor has NGC graded any higher, either. In other words, an MS65 is as good as it gets for this date. This one is lustrous and attractive.

1926-S Buffalo Nickel NGC MS65

Apart from the various varieties such as the 1916 Doubled Die, the 1918/7-D, et cetera, the greatest condition rarity among regular issues in the Buffalo nickel series is the 1926-S. This date is famous for its low (for the series) mintage of 970,000 pieces, the only production total that does not breach the seven-figure barrier. Survivors bring a premium even in low circulated grades. Mint State examples are actively traded due to the “conditional key” status of the issue, although these are primarily in the MS63 to MS64 range. At the Gem grade level, the availability of this issue plummets, and finer pieces are prohibitively rare. As is so often the case, this coin is much more lustrous than seen in our images. The NGC population report shows just 10 at this grade level with 6 higher.

1929 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Saint Rarity

The year 1929 marks a distinct line of demarcation in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series between common and rare. The 1928 Philadelphia twenty is a well-known and popular type issue that is well-produced and generally available in high grades. On the other hand, each later-date Saint-Gaudens double eagle, beginning with the 1929 and continuing through the series’ end in 1933, is a major rarity. Excluding the uncollectible 1933s, the five issues that usher in the series’ end comprise the 1929, the 1930-S, the 1931 and 1931-D, and the 1932. Of those five issues, the 1929, while still quite rare in an absolute sense, is the most available overall. Most examples of the 1929, however, are confined to the lower Mint State grades, and in Gem and finer condition, the issue takes a sudden leap upward, becoming rarer than the 1931 and 1932 issues. Only six have been graded higher by PCGS.

It’s “Spiked” – Boxed Gem

Spiked Shield variety, boxed with pinch of gold. Shipwreck? – check! Gem quality coin? – check! Strong demand? – check! The sinking of the S.S. Central America off the coast of Carolina in September 1857 and its discovery in the late 1980s/early 1990s accounts for the recovery of more than 5,000 1857-S No Motto $20’s. The issue is widely available in high grades and enjoys tremendous popularity among type collector for that reason.
