1839/39-C Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC AU53

“C”-ing Double “39’s”

The 3 and 9 in the date are noticeably recut north on this variety, one of the scarcer varieties for the issue. Doug Winter estimates as many as 300 to 400 examples survive from a mintage of 18,140 coins, although the population thins considerably in the upper AU range, and true Mint State coins are rare.

1907 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS PR66 CAM

The Mint struck 154 proof quarter eagles in 1907, marking the end of the Liberty Head type. About two thirds of these exist today, and many in remarkable states of preservation. The end of the type may have prompted more examples to be preserved than in other years, but the unappealing matte proofs of the following year likely also spurred collectors to more carefully preserve the last of the brilliant mirror proofs.

This coin serves as a good example that the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” is not always true. In this particular instance, the coin is more yellow-gold (as opposed to orange-gold) than shows in our images. In addition to that, if you tilt it even slightly, you will see considerably more obverse frost and contrast than is apparent in our photo. Said differently, this example is absolutely stunning! The PCGS population is 9 with 9 higher.

1855 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS60

Rare Mint State

The year 1855 saw heavy double eagle production on both coasts, with 364,666 pieces struck at Philadelphia and nearly 880,000 coins minted at San Francisco. Do not be misled by those figures! The Philadelphia coins are much scarcer than their S-mint counterparts across all grade levels, and Mint State representatives are quite rare. In fact, PCGS and NGC combined have graded fewer than 50 pieces in all uncirculated grades.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS60

A Half Dozen

From a mintage of 1.2 million pieces, the 1879-S Liberty double eagle was heavily circulated at the time of issue and many examples were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade. Many coins have been repatriated from overseas holdings in recent years, but most examples seen have excessive bag-marks from rough storage and transport. Mint State coins are scarce in today’s market and high-grade examples are rare.

The present coin provides ample evidence of the popularity, with gleaming and frosty rich-gold color plus a sharp strike. 1857-S S.S.C.A. Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS63 and MS65

A Pair of 5’s and a 3

The 1857-S Liberty double eagle was a rare issue in high grade before the recovery of the treasure from the S.S. Central America. Fortunately for present-day collectors, more than 5,000 examples were discovered in that famous shipwreck find, making the 1857-S the most available Type One double eagle in high grade, and the favorite choice of type collectors.

1860 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Scarce Pre-Civil War

Although the mintage for the 1860 double eagles was a healthy 577,000-plus pieces, the issue is a conditional rarity, like so many early Liberty Head twenties from all mints. A considerable number were found aboard the S.S. Republic, which sank in 1865 in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Georgia, but most of those coins were in lower Mint State grades. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth report an average certified grade of AU53, and an average auction grade just below MS60. The current PCGS population is just 14 with 15 higher. Listed at $10,900 in the CDN CPG, $11,000 in the PCGS price guide and $12,000 in Trends.

1855-O Liberty Eagle NGC AU58

A Flashy O-mint $10 Lib

Only 18,000 eagles were minted in New Orleans throughout 1855, as gold coin production shifted to the new San Francisco Mint, which had opened the previous year. Apparently, very few were saved as this issue is rarely seen in higher grades. The NGC census stands at just 14 with none higher. This particular example offers flashy, highly lustrous surfaces and a pleasing overall appearance. Listed at $21,200 in the CDN CPG and the NGC price guide and $22,500 in Trends.

1899-S Liberty Double eagle NGC MS65

A Rare Gem

Although the San Francisco Mint struck slightly more than 2,000,000  double eagles in 1899, many of them were used in foreign banking and business transactions. Additionally, many of the extant examples were repatriated from European holdings in recent decades. This very sharply struck examples is tied with ten others for the highest graded by NGC. For its part, PCGS has graded only three MS65’s with one higher. Listed at $20,600 in the CDN CPG, $24,500 in the NGC price guide and $21,000 in Trends.

1895 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS65

A mere + from Highest Graded

Due to its generous mintage and the subsequent exportation and repatriation of many examples, today, the 1895 double eagle is a common date up to the lower reaches of Mint State, generally MS62-MS63 or so, at best. Examples in Choice or Gem condition, such as the one offered here, are extremely elusive, however. PCGS has recognized a mere seven MS65’s with a single MS65+ graded higher. Just two of those PCGS 65’s have sold at auction, the last one being more than three years ago. Listed at $20,000 in both the PCGS price guide and Trends.
