1839 Type of 1840 Liberty Eagle PCGS XF45

In his 1998 sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection, Part II, David Akers presented the following remarks on the 1839 Head of 1840 eagle: “The 1839 Type of 1840 issue is one of the greatest rarities among all Liberty Head eagles, especially in high grade. It is also far more rare that the 1839 Type of 1838 or even the 1838, both of which have traditionally been more highly prized due to their type coin status.” Today, only 50 to 60 examples are believed extant, with just three or four in Mint State. The example offered here is noticeably lighter and more lustrous than seen in our images. The PCGS population is 5 with 16 graded higher.

Listed at $11,800 in the CDN CPG and $13,000 in the PCGS price guide.

Very Rare 1847-O Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS MS63

In 1847 the New Orleans Mint was less than a decade old, at least in terms of coinage manufacture — construction began in 1835 and was completed in 1839 — and the facility set numerous records in the year. The eagle coinage for 1847 was the single largest O-mint production, coming in at 571,000 pieces, and even today examples are readily available through the AU level.
The quarter eagle mintage was also generous, at 124,000 pieces, but surviving examples are scarce in AU condition and legitimately rare in Unc. The PCGS population is only 3 with 3 graded higher.

Listed at $21,000 in the CDN CPG and $22,500 in the PCGS price guide.

Offered at $21,900

1859-O Liberty Double Eagle NGC XF45

A Rare O-mint $20 Lib

The 1859-O is a rare New Orleans double eagle with a small 9,100-coin mintage. Perhaps only approximately 100 pieces are known in all grades, primarily distributed throughout the various XF and AU levels. Only two Mint State pieces are documented, both heavily bag-marked. The 1859-O shares its rarity with most other O-Mint twenties leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. After the San Francisco Mint became operational in 1854, gold deposits in New Orleans declined significantly, and large denomination gold coinage plummeted. Between 1854 and the 1909, when the New Orleans Mint ceased coin production for the final time, fewer than 115,000 double eagles were struck at that facility.

1884-CC Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Tough Unc. Twenty Lib.CGS MS62

No circulation strikes were manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint in 1884, placing even greater demand on Carson City double eagles minted that year (81,139 coins). However, survivors are generally seen in XF and AU grades, often with problems, and they are seldom offered in mint condition above MS62. The one offered here exhibits an attractive orange-gold hue.

Overdate 1853/2 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS60

Rare Unc.

While the status of the 1853/2 remains controversial, collectors flock to the variety as the only potential overdate of the series. An anomaly in the lower loop of 3 gets most of the attention, and re-punching above the base of 1 is clearly present. A squarish die lump beneath R in LIBERTY is diagnostic of the variety. The PCGS population is just 3 with 11 higher, the latter figure being comprised solely of MS61 grade examples.

1852 Gold Dollar PCGS MS68

One of the Very Finest

The 1852 is among the common dates in the Type One gold dollar set, popular with type collectors. However, Type One gold dollars are universally rare in Superb Gem condition, even the common dates. The 1852 is actually rarer in MS67 and higher grades than a few of the other Philadelphia issues. In MS68, though this issue’s rarity expands to represent the rarity of the entire Type One series. This little beauty features a very sharp strike, satiny luster and a pristine appearance. The PCGS population is only 4 with 1 higher.

1903 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC PR66

Glittering, Eye-Catching

The 1903 Liberty quarter eagle claims a mintage of 197 pieces and the issue has a fairly high survival rate. Unfortunately, the population data has been inflated by numerous resubmissions and crossovers, but probably more than 100 examples of this issue are still extant. The Mint switched to an all-brilliant finish for proof coins in 1902, eliminating the frosted devices and severely reducing the popular cameo contrast seen on proofs of earlier years. This Gem is a typical example of the new finish, with razor-sharp definition on the design elements and deeply reflective fields, but only modest field-device contrast. The NGC population is just 9 (one of which has been designated “Star”) with 8 higher.
