1908 No Motto Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Satiny Gem

The design of the Indian eagle was modified to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in 1908. The Philadelphia Mint only produced 33,500 No Motto ten dollar gold pieces before switching to the new type. Despite the limited production figure, the 1908 No Motto is not too difficult to locate in lower Uncirculated grades, but examples in MS65 condition are rare.

1909-O Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS61

Very Rare Key

The 1909-O half eagle is distinctive in several ways: it is the final gold issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, it is the sole O-mint Indian Head type coin, and it has the lowest circulation-strike mintage (34,200 pieces) of any date in the Indian half eagle series with a proportionately low survival rate in high grade. About Uncirculated examples are scarce, and Mint State representative through MS62 are extremely challenging. Pieces grading finer than this are genuine rarities, and Gem-quality coins are virtually un-collectible.

1907 Wire Rim Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Beautiful and Vibrant

The 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle is avidly collected by series specialists and pattern collectors alike as the only available issue that shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the ten dollar gold piece. It is listed as Judd-1901 in the current pattern reference, but most numismatists now believe these coins should be considered business strikes. Initially, 542 examples of the design were struck, but only 472 specimens were ever distributed. The remaining 70 coins were melted after 1915. The design exemplifies the style of Saint-Gaudens, sculpted in high relief, with concave fields that slope up directly into the edge of the coin. As compared to our images, the coin is much lighter, brighter and more appealing in hand. Listed at $84,500 in the PCGS price guide.

1929 Indian Half Eagle NGC MS62

Rare Unc. Key Date

No half eagles were struck between 1916 and 1929, but the Philadelphia Mint produced a total of 662,000 coins in the later year. Unfortunately, the effects of the Great Depression were beginning to be felt and there was little need for the coins in the shrinking economy. Most of the mintage was held in government storage and later destroyed after 1933. No half eagles were struck in later years and the 1929 is a key date in the series today. Although our reverse image makes that side of the coin appear to be dark, you’re seeing the effect of the angle and lighting – the true color is actually quite similar to that of the obverse. Listed at $46,500 in the NGC price guide.

Choice Key 1911-D Indian Quarter Eagle NGC MS63

The 1911-D is the first of only three branch mint issues in the Indian quarter eagle series and it claims a mintage of just 55,680 pieces, a remarkably small production total for any 20th century coin. Accordingly, this issue is the rarest Indian quarter eagle and the acknowledged key to the series. Most examples seen are in lower Mint State grades. The one offered here is lighter in hue and more lustrous than seen in our images. Listed at $12,900 in the CDN CPG, $14,300 in the NGC price guide and $15,000 in Trends.

Vibrant $5 Indian Key – 1929 Indian Half Eagle PCGS AU55

The 1929 half eagle issue is a curious one, struck during the year that the Great Depression began its decade-long stranglehold on the American economy, an unusual denomination to produce at a time when the theme song (written a couple of years later) was “Buddy, can you spare a dime?” Although the Mint struck 662,000 half eagles in 1929, few were ever distributed to the public. Most of the mintage was still in government vaults when the 1933 gold recall order mandated its melting. Since the issue never circulated to a meaningful extent, most pieces known today are in various Mint State grades. Examples such as this are in demand among budget-restricted collectors, and the supply is extremely limited. This is one of just 13 so-graded by PCGS.
