1929 Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS65

None Graded Higher

Only the Philadelphia Mint coined gold in 1929, and production was focused on the double eagle denomination. The 1929 half eagle is, in terms of total population, the rarest Indian Head five in the series. Several hundred pieces survive, primarily in Mint State, since this issue never circulated. However, the PCGS population report shows only 12 at this grade level with NONE HIGHER. Nor has NGC graded any higher, either. In other words, an MS65 is as good as it gets for this date. This one is lustrous and attractive.

1916-S Indian Eagle NGC MS66+

Highest Graded, Rare and Satiny

The 1916-S is a better date in Uncirculated condition, regardless of grade. Only 138,500 pieces were produced. This was the only ten-dollar issue struck in 1916 at any mint, and no eagle coinage followed until 1920. Thus it’s essential for a complete date set of Indian gold. This is the only example graded higher than MS65 by NGC!

1903-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1903-S is a plentiful and largely unheralded issue, that only begins to command a real numismatic premium at the near-Gem grade level. This is one of only 18 to have received this grade from PCGS with none higher. The example offered here exhibits a very bold strike, satiny surfaces and pleasing orange-gold color.

1903 Liberty Eagle NGC MS66

Single Highest Graded by NGC

The 1903 Liberty eagle is a great condition rarity in MS66, somewhat surprising considering the mintage was 125,800 pieces and it is frequently encountered in lower grades. There is only one other MS66 certified — a PCGS coin (which auctioned in 2012 for $22,325). The strike is sharply detailed throughout, and the frosty lemony-gold surfaces are nearly perfect, aside from a lone mark behind Liberty’s eye that determines pedigree.
