1828 Capped Bust Half Eagle PCGS XF Details, Repaired

Excessively Rare

Any offering of an 1828-dated half eagle is a remarkable occurrence. The two non-overdate 1828 variants, BD-3 and BD-4, are R.8 (3-4 known) and High R.6 (12 to 15 known). This BD-4 example shows the date closely spaced and centered in the field between the rim and bust. Star 1 is quite close to the bust, and one of its points virtually touches the dentils. The reverse, shared between the BD-3 and BD-4, shows the last S in STATES centered over the US of PLURIBUS, and the top of the 5 in the denomination is slightly higher than the D. The surfaces look uniformly porous on each side. This is, no doubt, the result of whatever repair was made to improve the former appearance of this great rarity. In hand, the color is lighter and – more yellow-gold in hue. We haven’t offered one for sale in any grade since 2014. Listed in XF (problem-free) at $75,000 in the PCGS price guide.

1925 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS/CAC MS66+

Highest Graded 1925 DDR

Close examination reveals slight reverse doubling along the lower edge of the eagle and among letters of the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. Die doubling of similar strength in a 20th century copper, nickel, or silver series might secure a Guide Book listing, but double eagles are currently collected principally by type or issue.

1912-S Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Rare and Highly Attractive Gem

As an issue overall, the 1912-S is positioned in the middle of the 32 issues in the ten-dollar Indian series, but it is in Uncirculated grades that it is best known. Few were set aside in mint condition, and of the ones that were most are not better than MS62. At the Gem level, the 1912-S is a stand-up-and-take-notice rarity. This particular representative boasts lovely orange-gold color and silky-smooth surfaces. The PCGS population is just 15 with 2 higher.

1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 900 Thous. PCGS AU53

Local merchants petitioned the U.S. Assay Office to issue lower denomination gold coins in early 1853 to deal with a chronic shortage of small change in the region. The Assay Office complied, issuing $10 and $20 coinage on an emergency basis from February 23 to March 1. But these coins were necessarily of lower fineness than the .900 alloy specified by the federal government because the firm had no parting acids on hand. When a supply of parting acids finally arrived, the Assay Office produced $10 coins with the proper fineness between March and April of 1853. They are classified as the K-16 variety in Don Kagin’s series reference and are quite elusive and prized today. In hand, this one’s color is lighter than seen in our images. The PCGS population is just 2 with 14 higher.

Saint-Gaudens’ initial design for the Indian eagle did not include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, but the inscription was added in 1908, creating a popular two-year design type. The 1907 issue is the go-to No Motto type-coin for many collectors. And that makes perfect sense, as it’s a first- year-of-issue of a two-year type.

The 1892 double eagle is the last of the ultra-low-mintage dates in the Liberty Head series, struck to the extent of just 4,430 coins. Examples in any grade carry a premium over the common date, but this issue is especially rare in Mint State. A limited supply of About Uncirculated coins supplies the needs of most collectors. Sadly, you wouldn’t know it from our images, but this example is lustrous, flashy and semi-prooflike in appearance.

1878-CC Liberty Double Eagle NGC AU53

Double eagle production at the Carson City Mint declined drastically in 1878, when a meager mintage of 13,180 pieces was accomplished. The coins were released into circulation and fulfilled their intended purpose admirably in the hard-money economy of the western United States. The 1878-CC is one of the scarcest issues of the Carson City series today, both in terms of total number of coins known and high-grade rarity.

In Mint State, this, the BD-1, is by far the scarcer of the two 1811 half eagle varieties. In the absolute sense, BD-1 is fairly plentiful for an early half eagle with perhaps 175 to 250 coins known, per John Dannreuther. But the population thins considerably in Mint State. The NGC population is a mere 3 with 5 higher, none finer than MS64. The one we offer here boasts a sharp strike and frosty surfaces.

1805 Draped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS64

Flashy, Choice Uncirculated

Prior to the publication of Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties in 2006, there was considerable confusion surrounding the half eagle die varieties of 1805 and 1806. Some coins were routinely offered as “new varieties” because they didn’t match anything in Walter Breen’s 1960s-era monograph. One later author described seven 1805 half eagle varieties, and noted that five of those seven were unlisted in Breen. Finally, using the observations of Harry Bass, Dannreuther correctly published the five known varieties in his 2006 reference, creating order out of chaos. When viewed in hand, this coin is lighter and far more lustrous and flashier than seen in in our images. The NGC population is just 16 with 4 higher.
