1855-O Liberty Eagle NGC AU58

A Flashy O-mint $10 Lib

Only 18,000 eagles were minted in New Orleans throughout 1855, as gold coin production shifted to the new San Francisco Mint, which had opened the previous year. Apparently, very few were saved as this issue is rarely seen in higher grades. The NGC census stands at just 14 with none higher. This particular example offers flashy, highly lustrous surfaces and a pleasing overall appearance. Listed at $21,200 in the CDN CPG and the NGC price guide and $22,500 in Trends.

1907 Wire Rim Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Beautiful and Vibrant

The 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle is avidly collected by series specialists and pattern collectors alike as the only available issue that shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the ten dollar gold piece. It is listed as Judd-1901 in the current pattern reference, but most numismatists now believe these coins should be considered business strikes. Initially, 542 examples of the design were struck, but only 472 specimens were ever distributed. The remaining 70 coins were melted after 1915. The design exemplifies the style of Saint-Gaudens, sculpted in high relief, with concave fields that slope up directly into the edge of the coin. As compared to our images, the coin is much lighter, brighter and more appealing in hand. Listed at $84,500 in the PCGS price guide.

1839 Liberty Eagle NGC AU55

Rare Two-Year Type

This is the “Large Letters Head of 38” type, which is a distinct two-year type, which shows a more ornate portrait of Liberty on the obverse. The first issue of this two-year type – the 1838 -is far too rare in AU condition for most type collecting pursuits, as only 80 to 100 examples of that date are known. However, the 1839 (1839/8) Type of 1838 is a more comfortable acquisition in this high of a grade. About Uncirculated coins are still scarce, though, and collectors will have limited opportunities to acquire high-end examples. This one is more lustrous and flashier in hand. Listed at $12,100 in the CDN CPG and $10,500 in the NGC price guide.

First Year of Issue 1838 Liberty Eagle PCGS AU53

The Philadelphia Mint struck a meager total of 7,200 ten dollar gold pieces in 1838, after a 34-year hiatus. The coins featured Christian Gobrecht’s brand new Liberty design, which was modified slightly the next year, creating a short-lived design subtype for collectors. As might be expected, the 1838 Liberty eagle is an elusive issue, especially in high grade.

The PCGS population stands at just 3 with 19 higher. The example offered here is lighter, brighter and flashier than seen in our images. Listed at $23,000 in the CDN CPG and $21,000 in the PCGS price guide.
