1869 Eagle NGC AU58

Very Scarce, Neary Mint State

The 1869 Liberty eagle is always in demand because of its memorably low business-strike mintage of 1,830 pieces. Contemporary collectors preferred to update their collections by purchasing proof specimens from the Mint every year, so few high-quality circulation strikes were saved for numismatic purposes. The issue is rare in AU58 condition, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. While impossible to know from viewing our images, this coin is highly lustrous and eye-appealing. The NGC population is 7 with 3 higher.

1873 (Closed 3) Liberty Eagle NGC AU53

Very Rare

The 1873 Closed 3 (old name) or Close 3 (current nomenclature) coins were struck early in the year and the date logotype for all denominations was modified following complaints that the digit looked like an 8. Among Liberty eagles, the entire 800-coin mintage for the year was produced in January 1873, and none were minted with the modified Open 3 date style. Proof coins were preferred over Mint State coins in the 19th century, so no circulation strikes were saved at the time of issue, despite the low mintage. As a result, high grade survivors are non-existent. The NGC population is only 2 with 9 higher, none better than AU58.

1847 Liberty Eagle NGC MS64

Very Rare, Dazzling, Near-Gem

The two highest mintage issues of the No Motto Liberty ten series are the 1847 and 1847-O. Something happened that year to increase production, and the mostly likely cause was the Spanish-American War, which continued throughout 1847. Despite a comparatively large production, the 1847 is usually seen in XF and AU grades, uncirculated examples are tough to come by and choice uncirculated ones are almost unheard of. This is the only MS64 graded by NGC with none higher (though they have also recognized a single MS64PL, as well). This exquisite representative boasts flashy, semi-prooflike fields and some pleasing cameo contrast on each side.

1913-S Indian Eagle NGC MS64+ CAC

San Fran $10 Indian Rarity

The 1913-S Indian eagle claims a low production total of 66,000 pieces and few high-quality specimens were saved by contemporary collectors. Most of the coins were released into circulation at the time of issue, where they circulated heavily in both domestic and foreign trade. As a result, most examples seen today are in circulated grades, in the VF-AU grade range. In his Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century, Mike Fuljenz notes: “The 1913-S Eagle is regarded as one of the great condition rarities in all of the 20th century U.S. gold series. It is moderately scarce even in circulated grades and the small numbers of Uncirculated pieces that exist consist mainly of MS60 to MS62 pieces. Only three examples have been graded higher by NGC. In MS63, this date is rare and it is very rare in MS64.”

1916-S Indian Eagle NGC MS66+

Highest Graded, Rare and Satiny

The 1916-S is a better date in Uncirculated condition, regardless of grade. Only 138,500 pieces were produced. This was the only ten-dollar issue struck in 1916 at any mint, and no eagle coinage followed until 1920. Thus it’s essential for a complete date set of Indian gold. This is the only example graded higher than MS65 by NGC!

1907 Rolled Edge $10 Indian PCGS MS65

Breathtaking Rarity

Struck in September 1907, the “Rolled Edge”) 1907 Indian eagle is one of the rarest issues in the series, surpassed only by the 1933. It retains the smooth, sculpted details of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original Wire Rim models but with a defined border that Chief Engraver Charles Barber turned into the die in an effort to improve stacking of the coins. Although 31,500 pieces were struck, most of the coins never left the Mint, as all but 50 were melted. In Renaissance of American Coinage, 1905-1908, Roger Burdette lists 10 pieces as having gone to the Mint Bureau, two to the Metropolitan Art Museum, and eight to Mint officials, which left 30 pieces on hand at the Mint that could be acquired by collectors. Although understandably, most have been carefully preserved, the PCGS population is still just 17 with 19 higher (no doubt, including a fair number of re-submissions).

1914-S Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Gem; Just Two Graded Higher

Here is a most impressive survivor from among this moderately low-mintage San Francisco issue – the 14th lowest mintage of the series. While its ranking makes sense when discussing circulated coins, when strictly uncirculated examples are considered, the issue is among the scarcest all ten-dollar Indians. Additionally, it’s seldom available with both problem-free surfaces and in high grade.  This one features lovely color and a highly pleasing overall appearance.

Similar to other S-mint Indian tens, the 1914-S is a significant condition rarity. This issue saw a mintage of 208,000 pieces and is relatively easy to obtain in circulated grades. Most Mint State examples grade MS60 to MS63, and are obtainable with patience and searching. Near-Gems are scarce and MS65 and finer pieces are rare. The PCGS population is only 12 with 2 graded higher (one of which is an MS65+). That helps to explain why we have not auctioned a PCGS MS65 since way back in 2007! This one features lovely color and a highly pleasing overall appearance.

1842 Large Date Liberty Eagle NGC MS61

Scarce, Flashy Unc.

Although the Guide Book mintage for the Large Date variety is multiples of its Small Date counterpart, the two issues are similarly priced, and approximately equal in rarity. This is the only MS61 to be graded by NGC and just two have been graded higher. The one we offer here is – and we’re about to play our broken record, once more – is lighter, as well as more lustrous and attractive than seen in our lackluster images.

1878 Liberty Eagle PCGS MS64+

Just 1 Graded Higher

When one just looks at the mintage of 73,700 pieces, the 1878 would appear to be moderately scarce, but nothing would tip off the collector to just how rare it actually is in higher grades. Our records show that we’ve auctioned only six MS64/64+ examples in the past ten years, attesting to the issue’s extreme rarity at this grade level. This one is particularly well struck. The PCGS population is just 3 with 1 higher.

1828 Capped Bust Half Eagle PCGS XF Details, Repaired

Excessively Rare

Any offering of an 1828-dated half eagle is a remarkable occurrence. The two non-overdate 1828 variants, BD-3 and BD-4, are R.8 (3-4 known) and High R.6 (12 to 15 known). This BD-4 example shows the date closely spaced and centered in the field between the rim and bust. Star 1 is quite close to the bust, and one of its points virtually touches the dentils. The reverse, shared between the BD-3 and BD-4, shows the last S in STATES centered over the US of PLURIBUS, and the top of the 5 in the denomination is slightly higher than the D. The surfaces look uniformly porous on each side. This is, no doubt, the result of whatever repair was made to improve the former appearance of this great rarity. In hand, the color is lighter and – more yellow-gold in hue. We haven’t offered one for sale in any grade since 2014. Listed in XF (problem-free) at $75,000 in the PCGS price guide.
