1924-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS64

This one is a toughie.

Despite its substantial mintage of more than three million pieces, the 1924-D double eagle has always been an elusive issue. Most of the coins were held in Mint vaults or Federal Reserve Banks until the Gold Recall of 1933, and subsequently melted into gold bars for storage at Fort Knox. Comparatively few reached circulation in this country and the issue was believed to be quite rare in the 1940s. Fortunately, some of the exported coins were returned to the U.S., beginning about 1950, and the supply has been considerably augmented since then. The 1924-D is still scarce in MS64 condition, and very rare in higher grades. Only twelve have been graded 65 or higher by PCGS. Listed at $11,600 in the CDN CPG, $11,000 in the PCGS price guide and $12,500 in Trends.

1860-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS61

Rare Mint State

The 1860-S Type One Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 544,950 pieces, a substantial production total in absolute terms, but slightly smaller than average for a San Francisco issue from this period. The coins were released into the channels of commerce, where they circulated heavily for many years, suffering the usual wear and attrition along the way. Few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary numismatists and the issue is rare in Mint State grades today. The current PCGS population is 16 with 12 higher. This particular example is a bit lighter and brighter than seen on our images. Listed at $16,300 in the CDN CPG and $12,000 in the PCGS price guide.

Rare Late Date Saint – 1925-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS64+

The 1925-S double eagle was spared from complete eradication during the mid-1930s gold melts by trade exportation, which preserved small quantities in South American and other foreign banks until recent decades. Although several hundred thousand pieces were paid out to Federal Reserve Banks, per Roger Burdette, the small surviving population of this date does not suggest that any large quantities ever made it into public hands domestically. The date is scarce across the Mint State spectrum, and its availability declines sharply in MS64. Gems, although in existence, are far out of reach for all but the most financially backed collectors. The NGC population stands at just 1 with 4 higher. Listed at $65,000 in the NGC price guide.

Gem 1908-D Motto Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS66

1908 D “Motto” Double Eagle Obverse

In 1908, Congress passed legislation to restore the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the double eagle and other denominations, which had been omitted by Saint-Gaudens and President Roosevelt during the designing process in 1907. The motto was incorporated into the rays above the sun on the reverse. Double eagle coinage at Denver in 1908 included more than 663,000 No Motto coins and 349,500 With Motto pieces. The latter type is available through MS65 but is conditionally elusive in MS66 condition. The NGC census stands at just 7 with 7 higher. NGC price guide is $23,000
