1854 Kellogg & Co. $20 NGC MS60

Rare Mint State

John Grover Kellogg was one of the most respected assayers and coiners in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. He was involved in many of the preeminent refining operations of the period, partnering with the likes of John Moffat, G.F. Richter, and Augustus Humbert from 1849 through 1860. In 1854, these twenty dollar gold pieces served a vital role in commerce during the time between the closure of the United State Assay Office and the full operation of the San Francisco Mint, which opened in April of that year. As is the case with many of our offerings, this coin is somewhat lighter and brighter than seen in our images. The NGC population is just 9 with 17 graded higher.

1893-CC $20 NGC MS 61

The Last Year of Issue for Carson City Double Eagles

All Carson City Double Eagles are scarce in Mint Quality, and the 1893 is no exception – with collector demand increasing every year, Mint State examples of all dates are becoming less available.

On offer today is a lustrous MS 61 example, frosty with reddish highlights – it is a specimen worthy of serious consideration.

1877-CC $20 Liberty AU58 PCGS

Elusive

Widely circulated at the time, many of the 1877-CC $20’s ended up in overseas shipments and have extensive surface scratches – the specimen on offer today has a minimum of surface distractions and sports considerable luster and eye appeal. Perfect for the specialist CC collector or US gold enthusiast.

1857 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Only 7 Graded Higher

The 1857 Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 439,375 pieces and the issue is not difficult to locate in circulated grades up to the XF-AU level. This issue was not nearly as well-represented in recent shipwreck finds as its San Francisco counterpart, with only two examples recovered from the S.S. Central America and 26 found in the wreck of the S.S. Republic. As a result, the 1857 is rare in MS62 condition, and a prime condition rarity in higher grades. The one offered here displays a crusty area at approximately 1:00-2:00 at the obverse rim. We prefer to leave it as is, for its originality. The PCGS population is just 28 with 7 higher.

1857-O Liberty Double Eagle NGC AU58

1857-O Liberty Double Eagle NGC AU58

Although the 30,000-piece mintage of the 1857-O Liberty double eagle would be considered small in almost any other series, it was actually a significant increase over the production totals of the previous three years for this denomination at New Orleans. The coins were released into circulation, where they suffered heavy use and attrition over time. Despite a number of quality pieces that were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic in recent times, the 1857-O is an elusive issue in AU58, and Mint State specimens are rare. This example is considerably more lustrous/brighter than seen in our imagesThe NGC population stands at 27 with just 7 higher.

1862-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS60

Tough Unc. Civil War $20 Lib.

Most of the S-Mint double eagles coined in 1862 entered circulation, and today the average certified grade is just below AU50. The S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic treasure recoveries contributed 190 examples to the numismatic marketplace. Despite the appearance of those coins in the last two decades, this issue us still quite rare in uncirculated grades. The one offered here is noticeably more lustrous and attractive than seen in our images. The current NGC population stands at 11 with 36 higher.

1855 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS60

Rare Mint State

The year 1855 saw heavy double eagle production on both coasts, with 364,666 pieces struck at Philadelphia and nearly 880,000 coins minted at San Francisco. Do not be misled by those figures! The Philadelphia coins are much scarcer than their S-mint counterparts across all grade levels, and Mint State representatives are quite rare. In fact, PCGS and NGC combined have graded fewer than 50 pieces in all uncirculated grades.

1859 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS AU55

A 59 20 in 55

The 1859 Liberty double eagle claims one of the lowest business-strike mintages of any Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, at a meager 43,597 pieces. The small business-strike production was largely ignored by contemporary numismatists and few high-quality pieces were preserved for posterity. The 1859 is an elusive issue in all grades today, and most survivors grade in the VF-XF range. This representative is considerably brighter and more lustrous in hand. Not surprisingly, the PCGS population stands at just 18 with 24 higher.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS60

Tougher date; Minor Premium

From a robust mintage of 1.2 million pieces, the 1879-S Liberty double eagle was heavily circulated at the time of issue and many examples were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade. Many coins have been repatriated from overseas holdings in recent years, but most examples seen have excessive bag-marks from rough storage and transport. Mint State coins are scarce in today’s market and high-grade examples are rare.

1865 Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS63

Rare, Choice Unc.

The 1865 Liberty twenty claims a nominal mintage of 351,175 pieces. Before the era of recent shipwreck finds, this date was seldom encountered above the VF-XF grade level. Fortunately, 320 examples of the 1865 were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic. Most of the recovered coins were in higher AU- Mint state grades, all the way up to MS65. The one offered here is clean, satiny and quite attractive in its appearance. Listed at $19,400 in the CDN CPG, $24,500 in the NGC price guide and $23,500 in Trends.
