Rare Unc. D-mint Gold Buck

This issue saw a small mintage of just 3,533 pieces. The average certified survivor is in the AU range and examples of this rarity are seldom seen in any Mint State grade. Doug Winter writes in the third edition of his Dahlonega gold reference that “I have always thought that, along with the 1850-D, [the 1857-D] was the most undervalued gold dollar from Dahlonega.” The strike on this issue is universally subpar and while not unusually weak, this example is no exception.

1841-D Half Eagle NGC MS63

Highly Lustrous, Flashy

According to Doug Winter, from an original mintage of 29,392 pieces, the 1841-D Liberty half eagle is estimated to have a surviving population of approximately 150-175 specimens in all grades combined. These numbers are quite small in an absolute sense. However, in circulated grades, at least, this issue is actually one of the more available ones in the series, as the supply of many other dates is even smaller. A scratch in the right obverse field might be all that’s keeping this coin from a higher grade (and considerably higher value). In hand, it’s even more appealing looking than seen in our images. The NGC pop report shows just 3 at this grade, with 3 higher.

1839-D Classic Quarter Eagle NGC AU58

Rare, Nearly Unc.

The Dahlonega Mint opened for business in 1838, for the purpose of providing a coinage facility for miners of Southern gold and to service the local economy. As a result, coins produced at the Georgia branch mint circulated extensively. The first gold pieces struck at the Dahlonega Mint in 1838 were half eagles. Quarter eagles followed in 1839. In both cases, the first-year issue is a one-year type showing William Kneass’s Classic Head Liberty design. The NGC population is just 18 with 14 higher.
