1863-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Rare Unc. S-Mint Civil War $20

Gold coins were hoarded in the East during the Civil War due to the uncertain outcome of that lengthy event. Meanwhile, on the West coast, gold coins circulated at par due to the California public’s distrust of paper money. As a result, the typical surviving S-Mint double eagle is well circulated, although an exception exists for the amazing treasure coins of the S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan. The PCGS population is only 17 with 10 higher. This one is pleasing in terms of color and overall appearance.

1861-C Liberty Half Eagle PCGS XF45

Rare C-mint Civil War $5 Lib

Several factors account for the key status of the 1861-C within the Charlotte series. First, its mintage is low with only 6,879 pieces produced. Second, of those coins struck it is estimated that a mere 150-175 examples are known today in all grades. Third, it is the final year of issue for the Charlotte mint, always an important collecting point. Fourth, and perhaps of greatest importance to many collectors, is a portion of the mintage is believed to have been struck after the mint was ceased by the Confederacy. It is impossible to determine which coins were struck under Confederate control, but the factor of intrigue remains for collectors.

1862-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS60

Tough Unc. Civil War $20 Lib.

Most of the S-Mint double eagles coined in 1862 entered circulation, and today the average certified grade is just below AU50. The S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic treasure recoveries contributed 190 examples to the numismatic marketplace. Despite the appearance of those coins in the last two decades, this issue us still quite rare in uncirculated grades. The one offered here is noticeably more lustrous and attractive than seen in our images. The current NGC population stands at 11 with 36 higher.

1863 Three Dollar Gold Piece PCGS MS62

Tough Uncirculated. $3 Civil War Issue

The financial stresses and uncertainties of the Civil War caused widespread hoarding of all precious metal coinage during the war years. The U.S. government suspended specie payments in 1861, so gold coins did not circulate at par and there was limited demand for the three dollar gold piece in the national economy. Accordingly, only 5,000 three dollar gold pieces were struck in 1863, all delivered in one batch on November 21. Relatively few examples were saved and as might be expected, the 1863 three dollar gold piece is an elusive issue in all grades today. The PCGS population stands at 16 with 26 higher.
