1853 G50C Arms of California BG-435 NGC MS66

BG-435 is one of the most important and best-known California small denomination gold varieties. It was the only variety to appear on the back of the Jay Roe auction catalog, and the only variety to have both sides shown on the front of the catalog. BG-435 is the sole Arms of California variety, and is one of the few varieties with a side that imitates the eagle, shield, and ribbon motif from the Assay Office slugs. This is a very scarce item in any condition and Gems are outright rare! This is the only example graded MS66 by NGC, with none higher. It exhibits extremely well preserved, semi-PL surfaces. Unlisted in the NGC price guide but listed at $20,000 in the PCGS price guide.

Blast White1904-S Barber Half NGC MS65

Pop 1. Two Finer at NGC. Blast white. A meager mintage of 553,038 Barber Half Dollars was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1904. Most of the mintage circulated heavily in the regional economy and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. As a result, the 1904-S is one of the most challenging issues in the Barber Half Dollar series, especially in high grade. This spectacular Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements. The virtually pristine brilliant surfaces are lustrous and appealing. Nice Price Guide comp, too!

Offered at $28,000 delivered.

1870 Pattern Half Dollar PCGS PR65+ RB

Judd-993, Pollock-1123, High R.7. The obverse and reverse dies are both the designs for regular-issue half dollars of 1870. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Although these could be considered die trials for a regular issue, there is little doubt that, given the plethora of different die designs and combinations, plain and reeded edges, strikes in copper, aluminum, and silver — a cornucopia of variations — that these patterns were offered in sets to collectors or their providers. This is the sole highest graded PCGS example.

1895-O Barber Half Dollar NGC MS67

One of Only Two

With a mintage of more than 1.7 million half dollars, the 1895-O is available in a wide range of grades up to MS63 or even MS64. However, Gem or finer examples of this issue are important condition rarities and the top- grade coins rarely get credit for their importance to collectors. NGC has graded only 12 pieces MS65 or higher, including this and one MS67 Star-designated example, which are tied for the highest.

1914 Barber Half Dollar NGC MS66

Better Date, Highest Graded

The 1914 has the lowest mintage of the Barber half dollars at 124,230 pieces, helping to make it one of the key dates in the series. A few hundred examples have been certified through Very Fine. While the population declines in finer grades, the issue can still be located with patience and searching through about MS64. Gems are rare and higher-grade specimens are virtually unobtainable. This is the only MS66 graded by NGC with none higher. Here is an eye-catching, virtually color-free example.

1934-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar NGC MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

After several years of low mintages and intermittent production, Walking Liberty half dollar production increased dramatically in 1934, and production remained stable until the series ended in 1947. Production at the three mints averaged 2.8 million coins per issue from 1916 to 1933, and 10.6 million from 1934 to 1947. That is one of the reasons that some collectors only seek the latter issues, the so-called “short set” of Walking Liberty half dollars. This one is somewhat lighter in brighter in hand, as compared to our images. The NGC population is just 9 (two of which are NGC Star-designated examples) with none higher.

1921-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS64

Vet Choice, Nearly White

The majority of the Mint State 1921-D half dollar population grades MS63 or MS64, yet these pieces are in high demand because of the scarcity and cost of higher-grade coins. This is a key date in the Walking Liberty half dollar series. Its mintage of only 208,000 pieces is the lowest recorded, and it is the second-scarcest of the three 1921 keys in high grade.

1803 Draped Bust Half Dollar NGC MS61

Highly Impressive Mint State

Large 3, Small Reverse Stars. Ex: “Col.” E.H.R. Green. This impressive looking Mint State piece is one of just eight that NGC has certified as MS60 or finer, for all four die varieties, and only three of those are graded higher than this example. Both sides display vibrant luster at the centers with bands of gold and sea-green toning. This date is underrated in Mint State. While type collectors may have their pick of uncirculated coins dated 1806 and 1807, date collectors must look long and hard to find one dated 1803. This particular representative is considerably lighter and flashier than portrayed in our images.

1921-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS MS64

Challenging, Nearly White

At 208,000 pieces, the mintage of the 1921-D Walking Liberty half dollar is the lowest in the series. This issue is also the second-rarest date in the series in high grade Uncirculated, with only the 1921-S being seen less often. The popularity of the Walking Liberty half dollar series is due to a combination of the attractive design as well as the relative availability of every issue therein. That said, the key dates of 1921 are only readily available in low circulated grades. Collectors seeking a complete set will encounter a roadblock with the 1921 issues, particularly those of the branch mints. Collecting Walkers by date and mintmark did not become widespread until the 1930s, by which time the number of Uncirculated ’21-D coins was scant. Listed at $16,300 in the CDN CPG, $18,500 in the PCGS price guide and $17,500 in Trends.

Sharp, Flashy 1901-S Barber Half Dollar PCGS MS65

The 1901-S is the rarest of the first-year 20th century Barber halves, and it boasts the lowest mintage of the three at barely more than 847,000 pieces. The Complete Guide to Certified Barber Coinage ranks this tricky issue third in Mint State rarity, surpassed only by the 1904-S and 1896-O emissions. Circulated examples demand a premium in all grades, and Mint State coins are rarely seen. The one offered here is virtually white, sharply struck and flashy, with plenty of eye appeal. The PCGS population is a mere 6 with 7 higher. Listed at $12,700 in the CDN CPG, $13,000 in the PCGS price guide and $12,500 in Trends.
