An unremarkable production of more than 1.8 million half eagles was accomplished at the San Francisco Mint in 1903. The 1903-S five is widely collectible through MS63 and even MS64. Examples in Gem and Premium Gem grades are scarce, while Superb Gems of this quality are condition rarities.
The PCGS population is only 5 with none graded higher.

Examples are readily available in grades through MS66 and are only moderately scarce in MS67. However, the present MS68 coin is a major condition rarity, being among the finest examples extant. The 1903 Liberty double eagle claims a nominal mintage of 287,270 pieces. Like other high-denomination gold issues of the time, the 1903 was primarily used in foreign trade or as currency reserves. Beginning after World War II, a number of coins surfaced in European and Central American holdings, increasing the supply of attractive specimens in today‘s market. The repatriated coins are often found in Mint State condition, but they usually exhibit some surface marks from rough storage and transport. At the MS66 grade level, the 1903 is a very rare issue. The NGC population is just 16 with none graded higher.

The 1903-S is a plentiful and largely unheralded issue, that only begins to command a real numismatic premium at the near-Gem grade level. This is one of only 18 to have received this grade from PCGS with none higher. The example offered here exhibits a very bold strike, satiny surfaces and pleasing orange-gold color.

The 1903 Liberty eagle is a great condition rarity in MS66, somewhat surprising considering the mintage was 125,800 pieces and it is frequently encountered in lower grades. There is only one other MS66 certified — a PCGS coin (which auctioned in 2012 for $22,325). The strike is sharply detailed throughout, and the frosty lemony-gold surfaces are nearly perfect, aside from a lone mark behind Liberty’s eye that determines pedigree.
