1892-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS66

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1892-O Morgan was not well-produced and most examples seen are softly struck, with subdued mint luster. Some were released into circulation near the time of issue, making it readily available in circulated grades. However, most of the mintage was held in government storage and a large portion of the production escaped melting under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Still, at the Gem level, the issue becomes elusive, due mostly to its poor production, and finer examples are decidedly rare. Here for the taking is a pleasing, satiny, color-free representative. The NGC population is just 6 (including 1 star-designated example) with none higher.

1892 Liberty Double Eagle NGC AU55

Rare, Lustrous, Semi-Prooflike

The 1892 double eagle is the last of the ultra-low-mintage dates in the Liberty Head series, struck to the extent of just 4,430 coins. Examples in any grade carry a premium over the common date, but this issue is especially rare in Mint State. A limited supply of About Uncirculated coins supplies the needs of most collectors. Sadly, you wouldn’t know it from our images, but this example is lustrous, flashy and semi-prooflike in appearance.

1892-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Very Rare, Gem

Large numbers of 1892-S double eagles were shipped from San Francisco to overseas destinations to settle large accounts in foreign trade during this era. In recent times, many of those coins have been repatriated to this country in response to ever-increasing collector demand. However, most of those specimens show signs of rough shipping and storage. Today, this issue can be easily located in lower Mint State grades, bur examples in MS65 condition are rare, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. The PCGS population is just 19 with 5 (MS65+ examples) graded higher.

1892 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS AU53

Rare AU from 92

The 1892 has the last ultra-low mintage in the Liberty double eagle series, just 4,430 coins. Contemporary collectors paid little attention to high-denomination gold, and those that did often sought out proofs, not circulation strikes. As a result, this issue is about as rare in Mint State as its mintage would suggest, and even AU coins are scarce.
