Although heavily touted as a conditionally scarce date in Mint State, the 1883-S Morgan remains collectible in grades through MS64, and is frequently offered at auction in that range. It is the Gem grade level from where this issue draws its recognition. In MS65, the 1883-S Morgan is a grand rarity in absolute numbers, and in the context of the series, is truly rare. Including possible resubmissions, there are fewer than three dozen Gem or finer examples seen by the leading certification services.
The NGC population is 12 (3 of which have been designated “Star”) with 3 graded higher.

The 1883 proof Liberty half eagle claims a mintage of 61 pieces, a notable increase over the previous year, but still a tiny number in absolute terms. Forty examples were issued with the proof sets on February 10 and the rest were struck as individual pieces throughout the year. Unfortunately, the higher mintage just off-set a low survival rate for this issue, and the surviving population is not noticeably larger than those of previous years. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note, “There are fewer than 20 coins traceable today, including those in museum collections.” In hand this beauty is more yellow-gold hue than the red-orange seen in our images. The NGC population stands at just 2 with 2 higher.

Late in 1962, the coin collecting hobby was turned upside down when the U.S. Treasury began releasing silver dollars through banks and directly to collectors and dealers. Few Carson City dollars were among those pieces distributed in the 1960s. A decade later, the government’s G.S.A. again put the coin collecting hobby in a frenzy with the sales of Carson City dollars. The Carson City Mint produced 1.2 million Morgan dollars in 1883, and most of those coins remained in storage for several decades until they were released through the GSA sales of CC Morgans in the 1970s.Those coins were transported and stored loosely in bags of 1,000 coins each, so few were preserved in ultra-high grades. PCGS has certified more than 46,000 submissions of the 1883-CC since they began operations in 1986. Of all those coins they have examined, only six pieces have been graded MS68, and none higher. The one offered here is frosty and virtually white, with exceptionally well-preserved surfaces.
