1876-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS64

Rare, Last Year of Type

The 1876-S double eagle had a mintage exceeding 1.5 million coins, but this does not necessarily translate into high-grade availability. Mint State coins are only plentiful through the MS62 level, after which the certified population drops off sharply. In MS64, the ’76-S is a major condition rarity and anything finer is almost unobtainable. The NGC is only 11 with 5 higher. This particular example offers a pleasing overall appearance.

Fishing for a “Bass”?

Judd-1463a, Pollock-1614, R.8 – Unique. Struck in copper with a plain edge. This enigmatic version of William Barber’s beautiful Sailor Head design is unique, by virtue of its plain edge. The design was probably intended for the Trade dollar, but was never adopted. USPatterns.com lists seven specimens of this design in copper, with a reeded edge (Judd-1463), and two examples in silver (Judd-1462), but this is the only plain edge copper piece known. The design elements are razor-sharp throughout and the reflective fields show only minor hairlines and contact marks, with a mix of original red and light brown patina. A patch of dark amber carbon appears on Liberty’s cheek, possibly the result of King Farouk’s efforts to improve his copper coins many years ago. Ex: “Colonel” E.H.R. 1876 Sailor Head Pattern Dollar High R.7 NGC PR67RB

Extremely Rare

Judd-1465, Pollock-1616. A bill was passed by the House of Representatives in 1876, providing for the resumption of silver dollar coinage on a large scale. In response, Chief Engraver William Barber prepared a series of patterns for the prospective coinage, featuring different versions of his beautiful “Sailor Head” design. On August 11, 1876, Superintendent Pollock sent a specimen of Judd-1465 to Mint Director Henry Linderman for consideration as a possible design for the silver dollar. Linderman was enthusiastic, saying, “…altogether this Head of Liberty may be regarded as equal if not superior to any heretofore prepared at the Mint.” The sponsoring bill was defeated in the Senate, and silver dollar coinage was delayed until 1878, when the famous Morgan dollar design made its debut. Judd-1465 is a very rare issue, as USPatterns.com lists just six coins on their roster of known specimens. This is the single highest graded example by either NGC or PCGS!

A Rare 76’er

The overall rarity of the 1876 ten dollar rivals that of almost all other dates in the Liberty eagle series, with only the 1873 and the prohibitively rare 1875 being decisively rarer. The 1876 eagle also had a mintage of only 687 pieces, the second-lowest production total of the series, behind only the 1875 (at a paltry 100 coins). Survivors are rare in all grades, with fewer than 60 pieces believed to be extant. The sole finest known is an NGC MS61 Prooflike example. While not apparent in our images, this is a flashy, highly lustrous representative. The NGC population is a mere 5 with 6 higher.
