Very Scarce 1859-S Liberty Eagle NGC AU50

Since the First San Francisco Mint concentrated on double eagle production, the 1859-S ten-dollar mintage was only 7,000 pieces. None were given numismatic consideration, and PCGS estimates only “40 to 60 known,” comparable with the 1870-CC. The median grade is XF, and only a single example (an MS60 NGC coin) has been certified as Mint State.
The NGC population is just 6 with 13 graded higher.

Just 1 Graded Higher – 1859 Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS61

A low-mintage issue with a production of only 43,517 coins, the 1859 double eagle is a scarce issue that emerges as an important condition rarity in Mint State grades. Only 13 pieces are NGC and PCGS-graded MS60 or finer, and none have been examined at either grading service above MS62 (3/23). The 1859 has the lowest combined NGC and PCGS Mint State population of any Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint aside from the 1861 Paquet rarity, and it boasts the 12th lowest Mint State population of all Type One double eagles. This lustrous orange-gold example shows grade-limiting marks but features a solid strike and excellent eye appeal. Rarely did an important collection from generations ago have a Mint State example of the 1859 double eagle. The NGC population is a mere 4 with 1 (MS62 example) graded higher.

In the early 1850s, substantial California Gold Rush bullion was shipped via Panama to the Philadelphia Mint for coining. The advent of the San Francisco Mint, and its emergence from growing pains, slowed the flood of West Coast bullion to a trickle by 1859. That year, Philadelphia struck only 43,597 double eagles, down from more than 2,000,000 pieces in 1851 and 1852. The few collectors of large denomination gold selected proofs, and the 1859 is nearly unobtainable in Mint State. Patience is required to locate any example, and when one appears in the marketplace, it is almost always in XF to AU grades. This particular example is noticeably more lustrous and attractive in hand.

1859-O Liberty Double Eagle NGC XF45

A Rare O-mint $20 Lib

The 1859-O is a rare New Orleans double eagle with a small 9,100-coin mintage. Perhaps only approximately 100 pieces are known in all grades, primarily distributed throughout the various XF and AU levels. Only two Mint State pieces are documented, both heavily bag-marked. The 1859-O shares its rarity with most other O-Mint twenties leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. After the San Francisco Mint became operational in 1854, gold deposits in New Orleans declined significantly, and large denomination gold coinage plummeted. Between 1854 and the 1909, when the New Orleans Mint ceased coin production for the final time, fewer than 115,000 double eagles were struck at that facility.

The 1859 Liberty double eagle claims one of the lowest business-strike mintages of any Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, at a meager 43,597 pieces. The small business-strike production was largely ignored by contemporary numismatists and few high-quality pieces were preserved for posterity. The 1859 is an elusive issue in all grades today, and most survivors grade in the VF-XF range. This representative is considerably brighter and more lustrous in hand. Not surprisingly, the PCGS population stands at just 18 with 24 higher.
