In 2016, the United States Mint decided to honor the centennial of three classic American coinage designs. The Standing Liberty quarter was the second to be honored.

The coin is a bit smaller than a regular-issue 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, with a diameter of 22mm versus 24.5mm. However, because is is struck in .9999 gold, the coin is heavier at 7.76g versus 6.25g for a normal quarter.

Description

Introducing the 2016 Standing Liberty Quarter Centennial Gold Coin! This gold coin is an event that’s been 100 years in the making.

Beautifully struck in .9999 fine, 24-karat gold, this gold 2016 centennial anniversary release celebrates Hermon A. MacNeil’s original “Standing Liberty” quarter design. Each gold coin contains one-quarter troy ounce of 24-karat gold, symbolic of the coin’s denomination, and has a business strike finish.

The obverse (heads) features Liberty holding a shield and olive branch as she steps through an opening in a wall bearing 13 stars. Inscriptions are “LIBFSTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “AU 24K,” “1/4 oz.,” and “2016.”

The reverse (tails) depicts and eagle in flight flanked by 13 stars. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMFSICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “QUARTFS DOLLAR.”
