The Royal Mint

The Royal Mint is the world’s leading export mint, making coins and medals for an average of 60 countries every year. However, its first responsibility is to make and distribute United Kingdom coins as well as to supply blanks and official medals.

Opened by The Queen in 1968 in readiness for the introduction of the decimal coinage, The Royal Mint’s headquarters in Llantrisant, South Wales, employs more than 900 people. Trained security staff oversee the security of the 35-acre site, which operates round-the-clock for 52 weeks a year. The Royal Mint can produce 90 million coins and blanks a week – almost five billion coins a year.

The Royal Mint is a government owned company. We are committed to providing a financial return to the UK government in line with agreed targets. The Royal Mint’s Chief Executive is Anne Jessopp.

With more than 1,000 years of experience, The Royal Mint is planning for organic growth and sustainable profits.
