Silver Consumption in Global Automotive Sector to Approach 90 Million Ounces By 2025; Should Challenge Silver Usage in Photovoltaic Industry

With modern cars using more silver than ever in their
advanced technology components, the worldwide
automotive sector could need nearly 90 million ounces
(Moz) annually of the metal by 2025, according to a
recently-published report by the Silver Institute.
In four years, silver consumption in the automotive
sector should rival that of the photovoltaic industry,
forecast to reach 98 Moz in 2025, and currently the
largest application of global industrial silver demand,
according to the report Silver’s Growing Role in the
Automotive Industry, produced on behalf of the Silver
Institute by Metals Focus, an independent precious metals
consultancy.
The report, part of the Silver Institute’s series of Market
Trend Reports, examines trends in automotive production,
including the growth and evolution of hybrid and battery
electric vehicles. It also addresses transportation policies
that favor vehicle electrification in some of the world’s
most important vehicle markets.

1871-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS63

Positively Pleasing

The San Francisco Mint was the premier agency producing double eagles throughout the Type Two design from 1866 to 1876. In 1871, the California facility struck 928,000 double eagles, and more than 3,000 of those coins have been graded by NGC and PCGS. Of that population, less than one-tenth have earned a Mint State designation, and almost all such coins are heavily abraded; pieces grading finer than MS62 are extremely rare, as evidenced by the NGC population of 7 with 1 higher. In hand, this coin’s color is more yellow-gold, as opposed to the reddish-gold seen in our images.

1889-CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS65PL

Yes, it’s True!

The small original mintage for this issue was the result of the short period of time available for coinage, just three months at the end of 1889. The Carson City Mint reopened on July 1, 1889 after a four-year hiatus. The facility was in poor condition, due to neglect and idleness, and necessary repairs to the building and machinery imposed a long delay on coining operations. Coinage was finally resumed in October, and only 350,000 pieces were produced before the end of the year. Due to the extremely large collector base for Morgan dollars, this issue is typically under significant pressure to satisfy demand. The one offered here is color-free, flashy and gorgeous! This and one other are tied for the highest graded by NGC and PCGS hasn’t graded any PL examples this high.

Offered at $395,000 delivered

1895-O Barber Half Dollar NGC MS67

One of Only Two

With a mintage of more than 1.7 million half dollars, the 1895-O is available in a wide range of grades up to MS63 or even MS64. However, Gem or finer examples of this issue are important condition rarities and the top- grade coins rarely get credit for their importance to collectors. NGC has graded only 12 pieces MS65 or higher, including this and one MS67 Star-designated example, which are tied for the highest.

1918/7-D Buffalo Nickel NGC AU58

Nearly New Buffalo Rarity

Towards the end of World War I, with new personnel taking the place of seasoned technicians that were serving in the army and an unprecedented demand for small change, it is not surprising that some errors were made in the preparation of dies for coinage. The 1918/7-D overdate occurred when a die bearing the 1917 date was hubbed with another die that bore the 1918 date when dies for the following year’s coinage were being prepared. The resulting overdate is one of the keys to the Buffalo nickel series and examples have been avidly sought since the issue was discovered in the early 1930s. In hand, this specimen is somewhat lighter and brighter than seen in our images.

1883 Liberty Half Eagle NGC PR65 DCAM

Proof $5 Lib Rarity

The 1883 proof Liberty half eagle claims a mintage of 61 pieces, a notable increase over the previous year, but still a tiny number in absolute terms. Forty examples were issued with the proof sets on February 10 and the rest were struck as individual pieces throughout the year. Unfortunately, the higher mintage just off-set a low survival rate for this issue, and the surviving population is not noticeably larger than those of previous years. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note, “There are fewer than 20 coins traceable today, including those in museum collections.” In hand this beauty is more yellow-gold hue than the red-orange seen in our images. The NGC population stands at just 2 with 2 higher.

Gamestop = Tech Bubble 2.0, Are You Ready For What’s Coming?

Stocks have entered a kind of speculative frenzy.

You’ve no doubt heard or read about Gamestop (GME) the bricks and mortar video game retailer.

The company has been in trouble for months, failing to turn a profit since 2018. And this is happening despite revenues growing.

Because of this, hedge funds have taken MASSIVE short positions in this company, borrowing shares from their brokers to bet that GME’s stock will collapse as the company lurches towards bankruptcy.

How big were the bets against GME’s stock? Well over 100% of the company’s shares are currently being used by shorts.

Yes, short sellers can technically borrow more shares than actually exist. And that’s where the speculative frenzy comes in.

Individual traders,(not institutional traders or hedge funds),  who are big fans of GME’s business have launched a campaign to trigger a short squeeze in GME shares.

Remember how I said the short sellers had “borrowed” GME shares? Well, this means that they need to return those borrowed shares to their brokers at some point.

The only way to do this is by buying GME’s stock.

As a result of this, GME shares have gone from $20 to over $200 in pre-market trader today. And they’ve done this in the span of two weeks.

PODCAST: Juan Carlos Artigas, Head of Research at the World Gold Council, on why gold still glitters in 2021

Episode Description

Gold was one of the market winners of 2020 (with one of the lowest drawdowns over the course of the year), aided by a heightened risk environment, low interest rates, and strong price momentum, factors that show no signs of de-materializing anytime soon in 2021–not even with Bitcoin adherents making a counter-appeal as a safe haven asset. We talked to Juan Carlos Artigas, Head of Research at the World Gold Council, which provides timely insights on the gold market including drivers of demand, supply, and performance, and key attributes of gold as an investment and its role in investor portfolios.

1908 Motto Saint Gaudens

Double Eagle PCGS PR66

The Philadelphia Mint found it impossible to polish the basined surfaces and high relief devices of the new Saint-Gaudens design in the same manner as the old brilliant proofs of previous years. Accordingly, they adopted an artistic matte, or sandblast, finish for gold proof coins in 1908. After striking, the 1908 proofs were heavily sandblasted with a coarse grain of sand that produced a dark olive-gold patina, with none of the reflective fields and field-device contrast of earlier proofs. The resulting finish resembled that seen on some European medals of the period, but contemporary U.S. collectors much preferred the old brilliant proof finish. Mint records indicate only 101 proof double eagles were distributed in 1908. Remaining unsold pieces were subsequently melted. Probably no more than 60 to 70 examples survive today in all grades. In hand, the color is more of a yellow-gold than the reddish-orange seen in our images. The PCGS population is only 5 with 3 higher.
