1912 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC PR65

Gem

As the various proof finishes offered by the Mint in the early 20th century became increasingly unpopular with the public, production totals dropped accordingly. Only 74 proof Saint-Gaudens double eagles were struck in 1912, using an innovative sandblast process in place of the earlier matte and Roman finishes. The sandblast finish created an even mustard coloration over both sides of the coin, with tiny sparkling facets that can be observed with magnification. This sparkle gives the surfaces a vibrant “life” to balance the deep monochromatic coloration. Unfortunately, the sandblast finish proved just as unpopular as the matte and Roman proofs of earlier years. It is likely that some of the coins went unsold and were melted after the end of the year.

1913 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65+

Just 1 Graded Higher

A relatively modest business-strike mintage of 168,838 Saint-Gaudens double eagles was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1913. The coins were produced in nine deliveries, spaced throughout the year. Most of the circulation-strike coins were sent to European and Latin American destinations, and Roger W. Burdette estimates about 5,000 examples have been repatriated from overseas sources in recent times. Most examples seen are in lower Mint State grades, with the expected number of bag-marks from rough storage and transport. This is a rare issue at the MS65 grade level, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. In fact, the one we offer here is the only NGC MS65+, with just one (MS66) example graded higher.

1929 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Saint Rarity

The year 1929 marks a distinct line of demarcation in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series between common and rare. The 1928 Philadelphia twenty is a well-known and popular type issue that is well-produced and generally available in high grades. On the other hand, each later-date Saint-Gaudens double eagle, beginning with the 1929 and continuing through the series’ end in 1933, is a major rarity. Excluding the uncollectible 1933s, the five issues that usher in the series’ end comprise the 1929, the 1930-S, the 1931 and 1931-D, and the 1932. Of those five issues, the 1929, while still quite rare in an absolute sense, is the most available overall. Most examples of the 1929, however, are confined to the lower Mint State grades, and in Gem and finer condition, the issue takes a sudden leap upward, becoming rarer than the 1931 and 1932 issues. Only six have been graded higher by PCGS.

1909 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65+

The Philadelphia Mint struck a smallish production of 161,282 Saint-Gaudens double eagles in 1909, split between the normal date and 1909/8 overdate varieties. A large number of lower Mint State examples surfaced in a European hoard some time ago, but the 1909 remains elusive in MS65 condition, and finer examples are prime condition rarities. This is a highly attractive example with a PCGS population of just 4 with 7 higher.

1909-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65+

This Saint is Tough!

The 1909-D Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a better date, due to its small mintage of 52,500 coins. The surviving population is estimated at roughly 1,200 coins, of which the finest pieces either came from South American holdings or were preserved by a few numismatists from the Mint Cashier. European coins were usually jostled in storage, making low grades the norm from that source. The NGC population is a mere 1 with 2 higher.

1907 Wire Edge High Relief Pair

A Grade Lower Than Yesterday’s

The 1907 High Reliefs with Roman Numerals in the date, is acknowledged as the most beautiful design ever employed on a circulation-strike U.S. coin. They were the result of a lengthy collaboration between famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was encouraged to develop the design by President Theodore Roosevelt, and Chief Engraver Charles Barber of the Philadelphia Mint.  Each coin required three blows from the 150-ton medal press to completely bring up the design, and the planchets had to be annealed between each blow. The average time needed to strike each individual coin was 12 minutes, clearly too slow to strike any large number of coins. As a result, only 12,367 pieces were reportedly produced.

1914 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Rare Gem

The low-mintage 1914 double eagle was struck to the extent of 95,250 coins for circulation, with 49 of those destroyed for assay purposes. Roger Burdette reports virtually the entire production was shipped to banks or subtreasuries. A number of those coins must have eventually made their way overseas, as 3,500 or so examples have been repatriated over the years, accounting for nearly the entire surviving population of 1914 double eagles. Usually, these are seen in MS62 to MS64 with Gems being rare and Premium Gems practically unavailable. Only 8 have been graded higher by PCGS, 3 of which are MS65+ examples.

1929 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS64

One of THE Keys

With a combined certified population of just over 300 coins and no significant foreign holdings having surfaced in the past several decades, the 1929 remains an elusive “melt rarity” and one of the key late-series issues. While some researchers believe as many as 1,750 pieces may exist, a recent review of Mint records indicate a maximum possible survivorship of 1,176 pieces, before any attrition. The rest of the 1929 double eagles (more than 1.6 million coins) were cast into .900 fine gold bars and sent to Fort Knox. One has to believe that no great hoards of the 1929 twenty remain to be found. It is, however, the most-available date of the late-series twenties (1929-1933) when all grades are taken into consideration.
