The 1883-O Eagle is believed by experts to be the rarest coin of the denomination produced at the New Orleans Mint, and is indeed one of the rarest coins ever struck at that Mint at all.

With just 35-45 pieces known in all grades, finding one is a challenge. However, the true rarity of this date rests in the fact that few collectors ever let it loose once acquired. Years can go by before examples pop up, and the last one presented was an exceptional PCGS AU55 which sold for $126,000 just last year.

Most known survivors grade in the XF40-AU50 range, with anything finer an incredible prize when found.
