1876-CC Liberty Eagle PCGS AU50

Lustrous CC $10 Rarity

Annual gold eagle coinage at the Carson City Mint breached the five-figure barrier (and barely) only four times prior to the 1885 to 1889 hiatus during which the mint was shut down. Double eagles dominated large denomination gold production from the Comstock Lode-fed branch mint during this period. In 1876, only 4,696 tens were struck. This issue circulated extensively and is unknown in Mint State today. The PCGS population is just 11 with 12 higher. In hand, this example is lighter and brighter, as well as more lustrous and attractive than seen in our images.

1906 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC PR66 Cameo

Glittering, Captivating

Cameo proof gold coinage from the post-1902 period — the year in which the Mint eliminated its earlier production method that produced deeply contrasted surfaces between reflective fields and frosted devices — is quite rare and seldom seen. The example herein offered exhibits deeply mirrored fields, which contrast beautifully with the frosted devices.

1808/7 Capped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS61

According to Mint records, 55,578 Capped Bust Left half eagles were struck in 1808, the second year of the design. Four die varieties are known for the date, two with perfect dates and two struck from leftover obverse dies from 1807 that were over-dated and pressed into service. The remnants of the under-type 7 are plainly visible at the upper left and lower left of the final 8, and inside the top loop. The BD-1 is a rare variety, with fewer than three dozen examples thought to be extant in all grades. It probably accounted for 2,000-3,000 pieces of the reported mintage and is by far the rarest variety of the date. In hand, this example is considerably more lustrous and eye-appealing than seen in our images.

1854 T-1 Gold Dollar NGC MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

The mintage for the 1854 gold dollar was not as large as the preceding three P-mint gold dollar deliveries; however, it was still a respectable 855,502 pieces. It’s not surprising, therefore, that this issue remains popular among type collectors who desire an attractive representative of James Longacre’s Type One design. While the average collector would happily settle for an MS64 or MS65 example, gold specialists who pride themselves on unrivaled numismatic beauty should go for this beauty. The NGC population is just 10 with none higher.

1854 Large Date Liberty Double Eagle PCGS/CAC AU58

Large One (Date)

Much scarcer than its Small Date counterpart, the Large Date 1854 double eagle continues to gain popularity among collectors as one of the premier Type One varieties in the series. It is a considerable condition rarity as well as an absolutely scarce variety, represented by only a small fraction of the total 1854 mintage of 757,899 pieces. This particular example exhibits an especially wholesome appearance. The PCGS population is just 15 with 8 higher.

1888-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS67

1 of only 2 So Graded

Here is a superb, attractively toned example of a true condition rarity. Its surfaces are satin-like in appearance and exceptionally well preserved. In hand, the patina is a bit lighter and the luster, somewhat brighter than seen in our images. Tied with just one other (which is ex-Eliasberg) for the highest graded by NGC. For its part, PCGS has graded just one MS67, with none higher. The aforementioned Eliasberg coin was last auctioned by us in 2014.

1922 Grant Star Gold Dollar NGC MS68

Stupendous

Among the many distinctions of artist Laura Gardin Fraser is that she was the only woman to design a classic gold commemorative, the Grant gold dollar. (In the modern era, Chief Engraver Elizabeth Jones designed the Statue of Liberty five dollar.) The two Grant gold dollar sub-types are of roughly equal rarity overall. This particular example dazzles with brilliant luster, wonderful eye appeal and virtually impeccable surfaces. The NGC population of just 10 with 2 higher.

1861 Clark Gruber $10 NGC AU55

Tough

Clark, Gruber & Co. was a diversified banking business as well as a private minter of gold coin. 1861 marked its final year of minting operations, amid a large influx of gold coins struck at the Federal mints and local lobbying for a branch mint in Denver. The firm struck a large number of ten and twenty dollar gold coins, as well as quarter eagles and half eagles. All denominations used the portrait of Liberty and spread-winged eagle resembling Federal designs. As always, the gold content met or exceeded Federal standards.
