1928-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS65

Rare Gem

Although the 1928 Peace dollar is the low-mintage key date of the series, the 1928-S is a much more significant condition key. In MS65, the San Francisco issue is many times rarer than its Philadelphia counterpart, despite having a mintage that exceeds 1.6 million coins. Only 5 have been graded higher by PCGS with 4 of them being MS65+ examples. The one offered here is lustrous and lightly toned, with a pleasing overall appearance.

1915-S Pan Pac $50 (Round) NGC MS65+

Large Round

The Panama-Pacific Exposition was authorized to sell up to 1,500 examples each of both the Round and Octagonal versions of the Pan-Pac fifties, and the Mint struck 1510 examples of the Round version, including 10 examples for the Assay Commission. Unfortunately, the high cost of the coins ($100 per coin) discouraged all but the most dedicated collectors, and only 483 specimens of the Round design were sold. The remaining 1,017 coins were melted after the close of the exposition. These rare gold commemoratives are avidly sought-after in today’s market. If you’ve never held one of these massive and extremely impressive coins, you owe it to yourself to do so. In hand, this coin’s color is more yellow/less orange than seen in our images.

1909 Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Pleasing to the Eye

Among Indian eagles from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1909 issue is one of the most challenging to locate in high grade. From a business-strike mintage of 184,789 pieces, most of the coins were either released into circulation, where they suffered the usual wear and attrition, or were held in government storage until they were melted in the 1930s. Today, the 1909 Indian ten dollar is rare in MS65 condition, and finer coins are even more elusive. The PCGS population report is 18 with 15 higher.

1908 No Motto Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Satiny Gem

The design of the Indian eagle was modified to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in 1908. The Philadelphia Mint only produced 33,500 No Motto ten dollar gold pieces before switching to the new type. Despite the limited production figure, the 1908 No Motto is not too difficult to locate in lower Uncirculated grades, but examples in MS65 condition are rare.

1859 Liberty Eagle NGC MS60

Flashy, Glowing Mint State

This date saw a relatively small mintage of 16,013 pieces. Few examples were saved by contemporary collectors, as collecting high denomination gold coins was too expensive for the average collector in the 19th century. The coins circulated widely in the channels of commerce, suffering considerable attrition over the years, and the majority of survivors are in Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated grades today. This particular example boasts semi-prooflike surfaces and a wonderful overall appearance, which can’t be captured in our images. The NGC population is just 3 with 8 higher.

1833 Capped Head Quarter Eagle NGC MS61

Rare Unc.

As expected from a coin with only 4,160 pieces produced, many known mint state examples have semi-prooflike fields as almost all the mintage is essentially a first-strike. Fortunately, this one is no exception in that regard. A mere 60 to 80 pieces of this date are believed known. Mass meltings account for the scarcity of this and other early quarter eagle and half eagle issues. The NGC population is just 8 with 14 higher.

1907 Wire Edge High Relief Pair

A Grade Lower Than Yesterday’s

The 1907 High Reliefs with Roman Numerals in the date, is acknowledged as the most beautiful design ever employed on a circulation-strike U.S. coin. They were the result of a lengthy collaboration between famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was encouraged to develop the design by President Theodore Roosevelt, and Chief Engraver Charles Barber of the Philadelphia Mint.  Each coin required three blows from the 150-ton medal press to completely bring up the design, and the planchets had to be annealed between each blow. The average time needed to strike each individual coin was 12 minutes, clearly too slow to strike any large number of coins. As a result, only 12,367 pieces were reportedly produced.

1854 Gold Dollar PCGS MS65

Gem Type II

Gold dollar type collectors will find the short-lived Type Two design to be the most difficult to acquire. Of the six issues struck with the Small Head, Indian Princess dies, only the 1854 and 1855 are viable options for most type purposes and neither is particularly plentiful in high grade. Both the 1854 and 1855 issues are prone to strike weakness as a result of the high-relief design, frequently accompanied by the clash marks that are prevalent on representatives of the type.

1830 Capped Head Quarter Eagle NGC MS62

Rare Unc. Reduced Diameter

The story of the 1830 quarter eagles is a virtual carbon copy of the first year of this variety – the 1829. The production was a low-mintage affair, in this case totaling 4,540 coins, a slight uptick from the previous year. Only a single die pair and a single die state are known, since so few examples were struck. This is an extremely short lived variety (with a reduced diameter), spanning only the years 1829-1834. Representatives of each date are difficult to locate in any grade. Though not apparent in our images, this one is bright and flashy.
