Very Rare Mint State 1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. $10 NGC MS60

In 1860 and 1861, Clark, Gruber & Co. of Denver produced gold pieces in four denominations, $2.50, $5, $10, and $20. Substantial quantities of gold were mined in the region around Denver, including the most famous community, Cripple Creek. The firm was operated by Milton Clark, Austin Clark, and Emanuel Henry Gruber. The Clark brothers were wholesale grocers in Leavenworth, Kansas, and they teamed with Gruber, formerly a St. Louis bank cashier, to pursue assaying, minting, and banking. They  issued their first gold coins in July 1860. The purpose of these private gold pieces was much the same as it was a decade earlier in California. Gold dust and small nuggets were valued over a wide range by merchants, and the issue of private gold coins solved the problem. The NGC population is just 6 with 15 higher. Rare Gem – 1838-O No Stars Seated Liberty Dime NGC MS65

After almost half a century without expansion, the U.S. Mint established three branches that began operations in 1838: Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Of the three, only New Orleans struck silver coinage in addition to gold. Only 404,034 representatives were struck. As the first dime issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, this issue is also popular as a two-year No Stars type. In Mint State this date is scarcely seen, and Gem-quality pieces are nothing short of rare. The NGC population is a mere 4 with 2 higher. A Top 100 U.S. Coin and Classic 20th Century Rarity.

The 1937-D 3 Legged Nickel is a coin which is known even to people who have no familiarity with coin collecting.

Indeed, it’s one of those classic 20th century rarities that kids used to look for in their change back in the late 30’s and early 40’s and people still remember to this day.

When I have conversations with people about what I do for a living, it’s almost instantly one of the coins that rolls right off their tongue. “Have you encountered a 1937-D 3 Leg, or a 1909-S VDB Cent?” You know, the typical famous rarities everyone wants and has heard of in the news.

It is by far and away one of the most important 20th century rarities made. A result of an over-polishing of the die in the area of the Buffalo’s 4th leg which made it disappear basically altogether, creating an instant and classic famous rarity from the start.

Collectors covet the coin in all grades, but in the higher grades it is an integral addition to those collections wherein only the finest will do.

The present example is graded NGC MS65 +. That little + is key, because the last MS66 we can remember selling was for $55,000 back in 2016, and it hasn’t been uncommon to see them go into the 80k territory when offered either.

An extraordinary achievement in one of the finest grades you can get it in for the money.

The Complete Guide to Certified Barber Coinage ranks this tricky issue third in Mint State rarity, surpassed only by the 1904-S and 1896-O emissions. Circulated examples demand a premium in all grades, and Mint State coins are rarely seen. The one offered here is virtually white, sharply struck and flashy, with plenty of eye appeal. Very Rare Mint State 1909-O Indian Half Eagle NGC MS62

The 1909-O half eagle is distinctive in several ways: it is the final gold issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, it is the sole O-mint Indian Head type coin, and it has the lowest circulation-strike mintage (34,200 pieces) of any date in the Indian half eagle series with a proportionately low survival rate in high grade. About Uncirculated examples are scarce, and Mint State representative through MS62 are extremely challenging. Pieces grading finer than this are genuine rarities, and Gem-quality coins are virtually uncollectible. The NGC population stands at just 26 with 17 higher. First Year of Issue 1838 Liberty Eagle PCGS AU53

The Philadelphia Mint struck a meager total of 7,200 ten dollar gold pieces in 1838, after a 34-year hiatus. The coins featured Christian Gobrecht’s brand new Liberty design, which was modified slightly the next year, creating a short-lived design subtype for collectors. As might be expected, the 1838 Liberty eagle is an elusive issue, especially in high grade. 

The PCGS population stands at just 3 with 19 higher. The example offered here is lighter, brighter and flashier than seen in our images. Listed at $23,000 in the CDN CPG and $21,000 in the PCGS price guide.

The 1969-S Doubled Die cents have received enormous publicity in recent years, well-deserved given their status as among the few most spectacular doubled die errors in all U.S. coinage. 1851-O 3 Cent Silver NGC Specimen 65 Unique Branch Mint “Specimen” Strike The Only New Orleans Date 3 Cent Date

Branch Mint Specimen Strike and Proof coinage represents the rarest of the rare in American numismatics.

To understand just how special these coins really are, one must understand how coins were struck at Branch Mint facilities.

The Branch Mints, including New Orleans, were set up for a commercial need. Philadelphia was the hub, and the other Mints just part of a spoke. The hub (Philadelphia) made coins for commerce and to serve special collector interests, like making pattern coins and Proofs.

The Branch Mints were designed for one need only, to produce coins to demand for the regions they were in. That is why one almost never hears of the existence of a Branch Mint Proof or Specimen striking, because those Mints were neither asked to prepare such coinage and also lacked the equipment that Philadelphia had to do so.

Record keeping was not perfect in those days. There’s no reason to suggest a Branch Mint Employee was required to write down on paper that a coin was prepared in a special manner. Their existence often leaves the coin world stunned without explanation, but many very well educated theories can be devised.

The legendary late numismatist Walter Breen stated that just 4 Proofs were made of the Philadelphia Mint 1851 3 Cent Silver piece. The only notable mention of one of those coins selling was in a 2012 auction for a PCGS PR66 for $172,500. An important coin, but not nearly as important as a Branch Mint issue.

Since the 1851-O is the first and only Branch Mint 3 Cent coin ever created, it is easy to theorize that a special ceremony must have ensued the moment this coin was made. While small, it packs rarity with a big punch. Its existence isn’t even known by most experts, and it’s only because of our far reaching resources we were able to discover its location and bring it to you now.

These coins would have been lifetime achievements for many of the greatest collectors who ever lived, had they only known of them. Research has advanced this field of study significantly in recent years, and today we are better able to understand just how important these fascinating pieces of US Mint history really are.

Very Rare! 1797 Draped Bust Half Dollar PCGS XF40

The two-year Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar design type, bearing the date 1796 or 1797, is one of the three keys to completing a collection of early U.S. type coins (the others are the 1796 No Stars and 1808 quarter eagles). The scant mintage of 3,918 pieces and survival of about 300 examples affirm the key status of the 1796-1797 half. Both dates are necessary to complete a date collection of early half dollars, and no type collection can be considered complete without the presence of a Draped Bust, Small Eagle half.
