Choice Mint State
An adequate mintage of 6.9 million Morgan dollars was accomplished in 1901, but the issue is more elusive than the respectable production total would suggest, especially in high grade. Many coins were released into circulation and suffered heavy wear and attrition over the years. Of the coins held in government storage, many were probably melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Relatively few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. Today, the 1901 Morgan dollar can be found in circulated grades without much difficulty, while lower Mint State specimens are scarce, and high grade examples are rare.
