From a mintage of 3.5 million pieces, there are 16 die varieties known for the 1838 Reeded Edge half dollar. This is a very short-lived type and survivors at this grade level are scarce. This particular example is extremely well struck and unlike so many others, appears undipped, with original looking steel grey patina on each side. The NGC population stands at 18 with 5 higher.
